All attendees must log-on through their own email – attendees may not watch together if they wish to earn continuing education credit. HalfMoon Education Inc. must be able to prove attendance if either the attendee or HalfMoon Education Inc. is audited.

Certificates of completion can be downloaded in PDF form upon passing a short quiz. A link to the quiz will be sent to each qualifying attendee immediately after the webinar. The certificate can be downloaded from the Results page of the quiz upon scoring 80% or higher.

Continuing Education Credit Information

This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 3.0 PDHs for professional engineers and 3.0 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects in all states that allow this learning method. Please refer to specific state rules to determine eligibility.

Brian Craig Johnson

Independent Consulting Civil/Structural Engineer in Minnesota

Mr. Johnson provides structural engineering and forensic inspections in multiple states. His work focuses on staff development, mentoring, proper structural design practices, peer reviews and the investigation of building damage, construction or structural defects and their proper repair, legal support, report writing, expert witness services and expert reports. Mr. Johnson also consults as designer of record or peer reviewer for a variety of building types, including wood-framed single-family townhomes, and two to four-story assisted living, office, hotel, apartment, and condo complexes. He has design experience in big box retail in Florida’s hurricane prone regions, and he has experience with historic buildings codes (UBC, BOCA, SBC). A licensed professional engineer in Minnesota since 2004, Mr. Johnson earned his B.C.E. and M.S.C.E. degrees from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities. He is also a professional structural engineer in Nebraska.

Franklin Martin, MBA, BA, AAS, CBO

President, Construction Consultants International

Mr. Martin reviews the performance of municipalities who administer the state building code with a special emphasis on those municipalities who hold delegation agreements with the department to perform code administration for public buildings and state licensed facilities. He inspects and plan reviews public buildings and state licensed facility construction projects to verify compliance with approved plans and state building code. Mr. Martin investigates complaints registered regarding application, administration, and enforcement of the state building code. He provides mentoring and aids municipalities in their administration of the state building code. Also, Mr. Marin coordinates the State’s response to disaster events throughout the state.

Course Title: Structural Engineering Calculations for Wood Construction

Course Description: This three-hour course explores the structural design and engineering calculations used in wood construction to ensure structural integrity and compliance with current building codes.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to discuss the principles of allowable stress design and explore the standards related to structural design in the National Design Specification for Wood Construction.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to reference and comply with the 2021 IBC 1604.4 requirements for structural analysis that considers equilibrium, stability, geometric compatibility and material properties.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to analyze structural design and related calculations for attics, stud walls, sills, columns, joists and beams.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to analyze the 2021 IRC requirements for prescriptive construction and engineered design as well as identify the necessary components for construction documents and plans.
