Course Title: Wood as a Raw Building Material

Delivery Method: Live Online

Course Description: This course examines the raw material aspects of wood, including where it comes from, how it is harvested, tree species, tree physiology and morphology, its shrinkage and swelling potential, its defects, and its strength.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to determine to determine where the lumber came from for particular projects and explain why that may matter.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to describe how lumber is harvested, and they will be able to determine the species of tree they are working with.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to discuss basic tree physiology and morphology and how that impacts the quality of harvested lumber.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to describe defects that are common to wood products and how these defects can have detrimental effects or enhance the beauty of wood.

Learning Objective 5:
Learners will be able to discuss the potential wood shrinkage and swelling and what effect that has on finished projects.

Learning Objective 6:
Learners will be able to explain the strength of wood in various directions and how that improves structural integrity.
