David Harmanos, P.E.

Branch Manager at Hillis-Carnes Engineering Associates, Inc., in Pennsylvania

Mr. Harmanos is a professional engineer with extensive experience in subsurface exploration, soil testing, infiltration testing, geosynthetics, and seismic and advanced analysis. His expertise includes commercial, industrial and institutional foundation design; retaining wall and steep slope design; sinkhole remediation; landfill design; site work; forensic engineering; LEED consulting; and construction quality control/assurance (CQA/QC). Mr. Harmanos is a graduate of Drexel University where he received both his BS and MS degrees in Civil Engineering (Geosynthetics and Geotechnical). Hillis-Carnes performs geotechnical engineering consulting and laboratory testing services. Its construction services include evaluation of bearing materials, inspection of pile driving, slope inclinometer installation and monitoring, and retaining wall construction observation.

William C. Kwasny, P.E., BC.GE

Founder and President of CRL Associates in Wisconsin

Mr. Kwasny has worked on numerous projects as a geotechnical engineer throughout his many years of experience, both in Minnesota and Wisconsin. He has also been an active member in a number of associations including the American Society of Civil Engineers, The Geoprofessional Business Association, Minnesota Geotechnical Society, and the International Code Council.

Masoud Mousavi, Ph.D., P.E.

Project Manager at Geocomp in Massachusetts

Dr. Mousavi specializes in geotechnical engineering, earthquake engineering, transportation geotechnics, unsaturated soil mechanics, and in-situ and advanced laboratory soil testing. With a professional career spanning over 10 years, he has successfully contributed to a wide range of projects across multiple states, as well as in Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. He is well versed in applied research and design and evaluation of geotechnical systems as well as assessment and mitigation of construction defects, geotechnical failures, and natural hazards. Dr. Mousavi extensive experience extends to the design and evaluation of ground improvement systems, deep and shallow foundations, drilled shafts and driven piles, slopes, retaining walls, storage tanks, flexible and rigid pavements, geometric design of roadways, static and seismic-induced liquefaction, liquefaction mitigation techniques, wind farms, earthquake-induced settlement, site-specific response analysis, laterally loaded piles, soil heave and settlement and mitigation techniques, soft clay and peat, dewatering systems, earth-fill dams, differing site conditions, and defective specifications.

Course Description: This six-hour course explores the role of geotechnical information in design and construction, focusing on site suitability, structural stability, and risk mitigation. The course explains how to read and analyze geotechnical reports, analyze soil and rock samples, and determine foundation requirements and bearing capacity. The course also covers geotechnical investigation processes, compliance with codes and standards, and mitigation strategies for site-related risks.

Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to interpret geotechnical reports, analyze key findings, and apply them to design and construction decisions.
