Speakers
Ariel Steuer, ASID, NCIDQ
Interior Designer, The Kubala Washatko ArchitectsMs. Steuer, has over 15 years of experience as the lead interior designer at The Kubala Washatko Architects, where a design philosophy of Wholeness is practiced, in which the built environment supports and enhances both human activity and natural living systems. With an overarching concern for how people are affected by the built environment, her goal is to integrate restorative and living practices into spaces for the benefit of people and planet. Advocacy for non-toxic and sustainable design practices are folded into her approach that interiors should be timeless and integrated with the environmental and cultural context of place. As a lifelong learner who is always diving deeper, Ariel is guided by practical and established methodologies for bringing wholeness to the forefront. By synthesizing various fields of study, she connects the dots to illustrate how human health and wellbeing is interconnected with the quality of our natural and built environments, resulting in new perspectives for approaching how we design buildings and spaces.

Course Title: The Energetics of Space: Modern and Ancient Approaches to the Built Environment
Delivery Method: Live Online
Course Description: Energetics, as defined by Oxford Language, is “the properties of something in terms of energy” and Energy defined in dictionary.com is the “habit of vigorous activity and the ability to act, lead others.” Design and construction can be viewed in this light. Energy, or change, in terms of building materials and construction processes is vigorous. But that does not invalidate the ways of the past. Common is the phrase, “They don’t build them like they used to.” So, it behooves the design professional to learn and act on the value of lessons from the past as well as from the present.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to inform their designs by looking into the past and seeing how spaces were designed and constructed in the past.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to use subtle energy to improve the quality of the built environment.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to identify ancient approaches to design that are uncommon in design practice in the 21st century.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to describe how design and technology have affected human health in the past and how they continue to do so.
