This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 7.0 PDHs for professional engineers and 7.0 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects in all states.

Bryan Hoskins, P.E. Ph.D

Associate Professor of Fire Protection & Safety at Oklahoma State University

Dr. Bryan Hoskins earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Fire Protection Engineering from the University of Maryland. He also received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Maryland in 2011 with an emphasis on building egress. Dr. Hoskins spent one year working for Arup on projects primarily dealing with life safety design and people movement. He then spent two years working for the National Institute of Standards and Technology on projects dealing with building evacuations and emergency messaging. He is a registered fire protection engineer in the state of Oklahoma. Professor Hoskins is the chair of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) working group that developed a research roadmap for fire protection and is a member of the Human Behavior in Fire Task group for SFPE. He serves on multiple code and standards committees. He has authored more than 20 articles related to building evacuations and human behavior in fire.

Course Description: This course examines the 2021 International Fire Code changes from the previous Code, complying with its general requirements, and provisions for fire service and fire protection systems, fire-rated construction and interior finishes, means of egress, and special structures and occupancies.

Learners will be able to identify and discuss compliance standards for new provisions in the 2021 IFC, including provisions for emergency responder communications beyond radios, energy storage systems, and requirements for specific hazards.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to identify and comply with provisions in the 2021 IFC for chemicals and processes that create fire hazards, equipment that can be dangerous, building mechanical systems, smoking, and vacant premises.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to identify and comply with provisions in the 2021 IFC for fire equipment and access, sprinkler and standpipe systems, alarm and detection systems, fire-resistance-rated construction, and interior finishes.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to identify and comply with provisions in the 2021 IFC for means of egress, including general requirements, occupancy loads, calculations, signage, and marking.
