This webinar is open to the public and offers 7.0 PDHs to professional engineers and
7.0 HSW CEPHs to architects and landscape architects licensed in Texas. Educators and
courses are not subject to pre-approval in Texas.

Engineers and architects seeking continuing education credit in other states will be able
to claim the hours earned at this webinar, in most cases. Refer to specific state rules to
determine eligibility.

The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System has approved this
course for 7.0 LU|HSW (Sponsor No. J885). Only full participation is reportable to the
AIA/CES.

The Landscape Architecture Continuing Education System has approved this course for
7.0 HSW PDHs. Only full participation is reportable to LA CES.

The International Code Council has approved this event for .7 CEUs in the specialty area
of Sitework (Preferred Provider No. 1232).

This webinar has been approved by the Association of State Floodplain Managers for 7.0
CECs for floodplain managers.

Completion certificates will be awarded to participants who complete this event, respond
to prompts, and earn a passing score (80%) on the quiz that follows the presentation

Speakers

Mahsa Hedayati Ph.D P.E.

Senior Geotechnical Engineer, Freese and Nichols, Inc.
Dr. Hedayati is a senior geotechnical engineer at Freese and Nichols, Inc and an adjunct faculty at the University of Texas at Arlington. Her experience with geotechnical engineering includes subsurface investigations, foundation analysis and design, slope stability and seepage analysis, numerical modeling, dam rehabilitation and redesign, levees, floodwalls and drainage structures design. As an adjunct faculty, she teaches courses on computational geotechnics and the geotechnical aspects of landfill design. Dr. Hedayati earned her B.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering from Amirkabir University of Technology (Tehran Polytechnic) and her M.Sc. degree from Tehran University, where she focused on polluted soils and decontamination methods. She earned her Ph.D. degree in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Course Description: This course covers the types of retaining walls and their applications, retaining wall design based on soil parameters, loads and other site conditions, and slope stabilization strategies specific to soils and site conditions found in Texas.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to differentiate the types of forces that act on retaining walls.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to describe methods to achieve slope stability, including regrading, slope reinforcement/pinning, ground improvement, retaining structures, and excavation and replacement.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to identify and explain the features and applications of various types of retaining walls, including cantilevered walls, soldier pile and lagging walls, timber walls, gravity walls, anchored walls, and others.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to describe the factors that must be considered when designing a retaining wall, including soil design parameters, lateral earth pressure, bearing capacity, settlement, groundwater, backfill and service life.
