James A. D’Aloisio , P.E. LEED AP
Principal with Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt in Syracuse
Mr. D’Aloisio is a principal with Klepper, Hahn & Hyatt, a structural engineering, landscape architecture, and building envelope services firm in East Syracuse, New York. A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and is a registered professional engineer in New York and Massachusetts. He is a member and past president (1997 – 1998) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Syracuse Section, and a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), and the Structural Engineers Association of New York State (SEAoNY). Mr. D’Aloisio is a member of ASCE/SEI’s Frost-Protected Shallow Foundations Committee, the Structural Condition Assessment of Existing Buildings Committee, and the Sustainability Committee. Mr. D’Aloisio received the Order of the Engineer at Syracuse University in 1997. His 30-plus years’ experience as a consulting structural engineer has primarily involved the design of new building structures, additions, and modifications, and analyses, assessments, and investigations of structures and facades. Mr. D’Aloisio has performed structural condition reviews of over 15 million square feet of buildings and he has performed over 150 structural forensic investigations. He has presented over 300 times.
Lisa J. Goodwin Robbins, RA, CCS, LEED AP
Lisa J. Goodwin Robbins has been writing architectural specifications almost forever. Working on a wide variety of project types, she supports other architects, both designers and project managers, in their efforts to be green, to solve problems, and to get their projects built. She helps to develop and maintain Kalin Associates’ sustainable design specifications, LEED, LBC, and PHIUS documentation requirements, and base specification systems.
Lisa is also board chair at Silent Spring Institute, the leading scientific research organization dedicated to uncovering the environmental causes of breast cancer. During the past ten years, Lisa has been speaking about healthier building materials and indoor air quality at national and regional conferences. She is committed to raising awareness among architects and designers about avoiding toxic chemicals in our built environment.
Jodi Smits Anderson, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Well-AP
Jodi Smits Anderson, is a hiker, knitter, mom, wife, speaker, architect, nature lover, avid board game player, and at the root of it all: a Curious Soul. She has dedicated the past two decades to pursuing what’s possible through sustainability, adaptive reuse, and optimizing energy use, focusing on how the built environment can support the health of our building users, community, and environment. As a regenerative practitioner, she continually learns from Nature and by seeking inclusion, so we remain on a path of building toward potential. Her experience includes work as a designer and project manager for many Albany area firms, 15 years as the Director of Sustainability for a NYS Authority working on policy and implementations at state and federal levels, and, most recently, as managing Principal of the Albany Office of EYP, a Page company.

Course Title: Sustainable Buildings: Materials, Process, and Technology

Course Description: This 6-hour course focuses on practices, materials and technology that advance sustainability and reduce carbon emissions from buildings. The course begins by defining sustainability before evaluating sustainable products, identifying methods of carbon reduction, and discussing useful tools and resources, including guidance and rating systems, modeling systems and specifying materials. The course concludes by looking forward, specifically at sustainability goals and AIA 2030.

Learners will be able to evaluate sustainable building products to balance health, durability, cost, local production and environmental justice.

Learners will be able to identify ways to reduce embodied carbon in both structural and landscape architecture.

Learners will be able to explain what it means and what is required to attain certain certifications and ratings such as LEED, PHIUS and others.

Learners will be able to discuss what sustainability means in 2023, including its impact on health, diversity, equity and inclusion, and how to increase sustainability going forward with a focus on AIA 2030 and the AIA Framework for Design Excellence.
