Scott R. Haythorn PE. LEED AP. CEM

Scott R. Haythorn, PE, LEED AP, CEM, Principal, Henry Adams, LLC Consulting Engineers
As head of Henry Adams’ historic preservation team, Mr. Haythorn has extensive experience in preserving a wide variety of properties on the historic register ranging from national monuments to federal office buildings. Throughout his career, he has focused on historic preservation, having worked on large scale and high-profile projects such as the Boston Opera House and the Hippodrome Theatre. He is experienced in a variety of rehabilitation, condition assessment, historic structure report, preservation, and adaptive re-use projects. Having worked extensively for Department of the Interior agencies, Mr. Haythorn is familiar with projects meeting the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards. He holds a certification in Environmental Controls for Preservation and is well versed on the latest systems for protecting and maintaining sensitive historic collections.

Tom Liebel FAIA. LEED Fellow

Tom Liebel, FAIA, LEED Fellow, Vice-President, Moseley Architects
Mr. Liebel has been involved in integrating sustainable design principles into a variety of ground-breaking adaptive use and affordable housing projects over the past twenty years, with these projects recognized with multiple awards for design, smart growth, sustainable design and historic preservation. Elevated to Fellowship to both the AIA and USGBC in 2011, he is involved in ongoing research exploring the relationship between sustainability, preservation and urban design, with a particular emphasis in the use of urban adaptive use projects to promote neighborhood revitalization and civic engagement. Mr. Liebel served two terms as Chair the Maryland Green Building Council and chaired Baltimore City’s Commission on Historical and Architectural Preservation for a decade, serves on the Maryland Advisory Council for Historic Preservation, and served as the 2020 Moderator for the American Institute of Architect’s Strategic Council.

Lauren Park

Lauren Park, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, WELL AP Senior Associate / Sustainability Specialist, with GWWO Architects
Well-versed in the requirements of LEED, WELL, Green Globes, the International Green Construction Code (IgCC), Fitwel, and Living Building Challenge, Ms. Park works closely with project teams and clients to implement a holistic approach to sustainability that focuses on impactful strategies and techniques that are also mindful of budget, schedule, and aesthetic considerations. She leads GWWO’s Sustainability Committee, a research based group that actively tracks advancements and opportunities in environmentally-responsible design. Ms. Park earned a Bachelor of Science in architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology and a Master of Architecture degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.

Barton Ross, AIA, AICP, LEED AP BD+C, President of Barton Ross & Partners, LLC Architects
Mr. Ross is a qualified Historic Architect per the Secretary of the Interior’s Code of Federal Regulations, 36 CFR Part 61, who has contributed to master plans for the Virginia State Capitol, the United States Capitol and Princeton University. His preservation work has been recognized by the Society of Architectural Historians, the Vernacular Architecture Forum, the American Institute of Architects and the National Park Service. Mr. Ross currently serves on the Board of Directors for the AIA Chesapeake Bay Chapter, the Construction Specifications Institute’s Northeast Region, Preservation New Jersey, the National Landmarks Alliance, and he has chaired the Historic Resources Committee for AIA Maryland since 2018. He is a graduate of the Virginia Tech School of Architecture + Design and received master’s degrees from Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania.

Jeanne S. Tebera PE. CFPS

Jeanne S. Tebera, PE, CFPS, Principal, Henry Adams, LLC Consulting Engineers
Ms. Tebera is a licensed professional engineer and an NFPA certified fire protection specialist. She began her career at HENRY ADAMS, LLC in 1986 and currently serves as head of the electrical department. Ms. Tebera has dedicated her career to designing fire protection, electrical, communications, and security systems for historical preservation projects. Her work includes blending electrical and life safety systems into the historic fabric of various landmarks including The American Academy of Music, Arlington House, The Jefferson Memorial, The Lockkeeper’s House, Great Falls Tavern, The Brafferton, David Wills House, The Eisenhower Home (Gettysburg, PA), Plum Orchard Mansion, The Grange, The Hippodrome Theatre (Baltimore, MD), Knob Creek Tavern Visitor Center, Poplar Grove National Cemetery, Thomas Edison’s Laboratory and Glenmont Mansion, Hampton Mansion, and Weir Farm.

Allison Verley

Building Envelope Specialist, Construction Innovations Co, Inc.

Ms. Verley believes knowledge is power and there is always a solution for every situation. With a focus on sustainability, longevity and energy efficiency she stays up to date on the most innovative solutions for the building envelope. Through public speaking, digital media and articles. She is able to bring the forefront of information to local markets with a focus on proper use of materials situationally rather than a cookie-cutter approach. Ms. Verley’s Building Envelope focus includes Masonry Restoration and Moisture Management, Waterproofing, Roofing, Single-ply and Protected Membranes, Garden Roofs, and Assembly Solutions. She earned her undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering.

Joshua L. Winemiller PE. LC

Joshua L. Winemiller, PE, LC, Senior Electrical Engineer, Henry Adams, LLC Consulting Engineers
Mr. Winemiller is a licensed professional engineer who has contributed to numerous historic, preservation, and rehabilitation projects over 10+ years, focusing on electrical power and lighting systems. He has completed over 25 condition assessments of historic structures for the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission and has worked on a wide variety of National Park Service projects within the Northeast and Southeast Regions. With a passion for lighting and controls, Mr. Winemiller also holds the Lighting Certified credential from the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions (NCQLP). He is currently serving as President of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America – Baltimore Chapter. He received his Bachelor and Master of Architectural Engineering degrees from Pennsylvania State University with a focus in lighting and electrical building systems.

Course Title: Sustainable Building Preservation

Course Description: This course focuses on the sustainable preservation and restoration of older and historic buildings. The course begins by looking broadly at historic preservation and sustainability before providing detailed discussions on the preservation, restoration and replacement of specific building components and systems in order to achieve the goal of sustainable preservation.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to create synergy between sustainability and historic preservation goals by defining both terms, identifying common and complimentary goals, learning from our past, and utilizing principles of historic preservation as an act of sustainability.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to consider energy efficiency in renovation/restoration and maintenance, identify applicable codes and standards for historic buildings, and repair or replace building components that contribute to the building envelope and energy efficiency, such as roofs, windows and doors.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to review mechanical, electrical and plumbing system codes and standards and understand the benefits and drawbacks of maintaining or upgrading existing systems such as HVAC, lighting, power and fire safety.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to identify additional considerations for the preservation and updating of older buildings, such as fire prevention, egress, life safety systems, change of occupancy, and accessibility concerns.
