This webinar offers 7.0 PDHs to professional engineers and 7.0 HSW continuing education hours to architects in all states. It offers 7.0 HSW continuing education hours to landscape architects licensed in all states, except Florida, New Jersey, or North Carolina.

Speakers

Michael Drerup, P.E., F.ASCE

Drerup Building Performance Engineering, PLLC

Over the past 28 years, Mr. Drerup has investigated performance concerns at hundreds of buildings and structures. His work has ranged from single family homes to large building collapses. Mr. Drerup has evaluated damage attributable to earthquakes, blast, impact, fire, water intrusion, corrosion, construction defects, and other factors. He has served as a testifying expert in several cases. Mr. Drerup has also developed and retrofit designs for existing buildings. He has previously worked for two prominent forensic engineering firms and an international structural design firm. In 2014, he established Drerup Building Performance Engineering, PLLC with his partner Alicia Díaz de León, PE, SE, AIA, and continues to collaborate with other consultants and laboratories nationwide to investigate a broad range of issues pertaining to structure, enclosure, and construction materials. Mr. Drerup recently completed two terms as a voting member of ASCE’s Board Committee on Technical Advancement. He serves on ASCE’s Joint Task Committee with CROSS-US, and is past chair and a 22-year member of ASCE’s Forensic Engineering Division.

Course Description: This course examines Strategies to design and construct buildings to prevent failures, understanding the causes of structural failures, the forensic engineering process, the forensic examination of structures, and how to use forensic engineering information.

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify the causes of structural failures, including design errors, defective construction, material deficiencies, excessive loading, improper usage or modification, deterioration and degradation, or a combination of causes.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to discuss the forensic engineering process, including the conducting of an investigation and research, test protocols and measurements, determining causation and responsibility, and learning from failure.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to describe the basics of investigations structures made of steel, wood, concrete, masonry and building facades.

Learners will be able to discuss how to exam a forensic engineering report and how the information contained in it is used.
