Daryl Norris
Civil Engineer, Floodplain Manager with Norris Environmental Engineering, PLLCMr. Norris is a civil engineer for the City of Greenville, North Carolina, specializing in stormwater engineering, and he is the owner of Norris Environmental Engineering, PLLC. He is a professional engineer, a certified floodplain manager, a certified professional in stormwater quality, and a certified professional in low impact development. Prior to working for the City of Greenville, he worked with the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the North Carolina Division of Water Quality. Mr. Norris was also the environmental specialist and floodplain administrator for the City of Wilson. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Fish and Wildlife Management and a master’s degree in Biological and Agricultural Engineering, both from North Carolina State University.

Course Description: This course focuses on the objectives, design, maintenance and sustainability of stormwater detention and retention basins. Specifically, this course identifies stormwater management system objectives and design considerations, analyzes the basics and designs of detention and retention basins, explores sustainable options, and utilizes relevant case studies.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to explore stormwater regulation compliance strategies, prepare stormwater pollution prevention plans and discuss the anticipated developments in NPDES stormwater permitting.
Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to identify stormwater detention goals, determine impact area and flow, utilize inflow and outlet structures, and discuss detention pond safety and maintenance requirements.
Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to identify stormwater retention goals, assist in sizing and excavation, utilize forebays and emergency outflow systems and discuss multiple use options.
Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to implement low impact development practices, naturalize detention/retention basins, design rain gardens, and utilize underground storage and reuse options.
