Ray Meyer, P.E.

Regional Manager-Texas and Partner with CMT Technical Services, Inc.

Mr. Meyer has over 40 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, construction materials engineering and testing, environmental assessments and forensic investigations. His current practice focuses on expansive and soft soil conditions, soil-structure interaction, foundation investigations, paving design and forensic studies. Mr. Meyer earned his BSCE and MCE degrees from the University of Houston. He is a professional engineer in the State of Texas. Mr. Meyer is an Adjunct Professor for the College of Engineering Technology, Department of Construction Management at the University of Houston-Main Campus where he instructs courses in Construction Materials Testing and Foundation Engineering. He is a past president of the University of Houston Engineering Alumni Association, a past president of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ National Deep Foundation Committee, and a past president of the Texas Council of Engineering Laboratories-Houston branch.

Course Title: Soils in Construction

Course Description: This course begins with an exploration of soil science and properties, specifically the investigation, classification, hydraulic and mechanical properties of soils. The course then reviews applicable building code provisions related to soil, explains compliance methods, and demonstrates the calculation and increasing of bearing capacity. The course concludes with a discussion on soil compaction.

Learners will be able to analyze and classify various types of soil and explain the importance of understanding the soils on a construction site.

Learners will be able to calculate the bearing capacity of shallow foundations, piers and piles and use drainage, compaction and soil improvements to increase bearing capacity.
