Course Title: Soils in Construction
Delivery Method: Live Online
Course Description: This course begins with an exploration of soil science and properties, specifically the investigation, classification, hydraulic and mechanical properties of soils. The course then reviews applicable building code provisions related to soil, explains compliance methods, and demonstrates the calculation and increasing of bearing capacity. The course concludes with a discussion on soil compaction.
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to analyze and classify various types of soil and explain the importance of understanding the soils on a construction site.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to calculate the bearing capacity of shallow foundations, piers and piles and use drainage, compaction and soil improvements to increase bearing capacity.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to reference and comply with building code provisions related to soil, specifically the IBC, IRC and other standards and guidelines.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to discuss soil hydraulics (saturation, pore pressure, permeability) and analyze stresses in soil (overburden, vertical and lateral pressures).
LUs: 7.0 LU Type: LU|HSWs.
Prerequisites: Experience with sitework
Advance Preparation: None
Program Level: Intermediate
Course Expiration Date: 04/03/2026
