Dr. Jorge Meneses is principal geotechnical engineer with RMA Group. He was a member of the California Seismic Safety Commission appointed by Governor Brown and confirmed by State Senate (2017-2021). Course Title: Soil-Structure Interaction (SSI)

Course Description: This six-hour course explains the principles and importance of soil-structure interaction (SSI), how to use base slab averaging, how to calculate embedment depths, the concepts of soil flexibility and foundation damping, and basement design for structures on level ground and on sloping ground.
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to utilize base slab averaging (BSA) as a method of constructing a level and flat concrete slab, determine when its application is necessary, and calculate embedment depths.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to review soil properties for flexibility calculations and discuss the soil compressibility modeling concept of vertical, horizontal and rotational springs.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to achieve effective foundation damping through an understanding of the requirements, damping ratio, soil damping, radiation damping, and related limitations and issues.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to review and compare different types and models of basements for buildings on sloping ground and for buildings on relatively level ground.
