All attendees must log-on through their own email – attendees may not watch together if they wish to earn continuing education credit. HalfMoon Education Inc. must be able to prove attendance if either the attendee or HalfMoon Education Inc. is audited.

Certificates of completion can be downloaded in PDF form upon passing a short quiz. A link to the quiz will be sent to each qualifying attendee immediately after the webinar. The certificate can be downloaded from the Results page of the quiz upon scoring 80% or higher.

These webinars are open to the public and offer 6.5 PDHs to professional engineers
and 6.5 HSW continuing education hours to architects in all states.

course for .65 CEUs in the specialty area of Building (Preferred Provider No. 1232).

Completion certificates will be awarded to participants who complete this event,
respond to prompts, and earn a passing score (80%) on the quiz that follows the
presentation (multiple attempts allowed).

Antonios Vytiniotis, Ph.D. P.E.

Director – Group Lead, Massachusetts Consulting, Geocomp

Antonios Vytiniotis is a member of the Geo-Institute’s Deep Foundation and Computation Geotechnics committees and a regional Director for the Society of Construction Law – North America.  He has background in structural and geotechnical engineering, geotechnical earthquake engineering, and numerical analysis. He has worked on numerous projects in more than 20 states and multiple countries, assisting project owners, law firms, insurance companies and developers. His analyses consist of assessing soil improvement, soil-structure interaction, dam safety, causation of MSE wall failures, effects of adjacent construction (such as vibrations or pile driving), soil heave or settlements, pipeline installation, water intrusion, and backfill quality. He is experienced in evaluating slope stability, performing mechanical and flow-through-porous media finite element analyses and soil-structure interaction using various software such as Plaxis, Flac, Geostudio, ABAQUS, LPILE, FEFLOW and GROUP. Additionally, Dr. Vytiniotis has experience in data analysis, signal processing and GIS.  Dr. Vytiniotis has performed research on the seismic response of pile-supported wharves, seismic slope stability, the effectiveness of prefabricated vertical drains (earthquake drains) and soil densification in reducing liquefaction risk, the effect of gravel drains in amplifying seismic accelerations, and numerical simulations of centrifuge experiments. In the past, Dr. Vytiniotis gained international experience in Greece and Switzerland, and was appointed lecturer at MIT.

Course Title: Soil Mechanics, Bearing Capacity and Slope Stabilization in New England

Delivery Method: Live Online

Course Description: This 6.5 hour live lecture presentation examines soil investigation and classification, hydraulic and mechanical properties of soils, determining and increasing bearing capacity, and determining and increasing slope stability.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to describe the need to need to understand the properties of soil on particular development soils and value of conducting soil investigations to determine the appropriate type and design of that foundation, which will ensure its longevity and safety.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to articulate the need to understand the hydraulic and mechanical properties of site soils so that soil compressibility and drainage can be considered for foundation design.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to calculate soil bearing capacities for shallow foundations, piers and piles, and they will be able to explain how to increase bearing capacity through draining, compaction, and soil improvement.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to differentiate the stability of natural and engineered slopes, explain why slopes fail, and describe slope stabilization methods to avoid slope failure and landslides.
