Daniel Messmer, P.E., D. GE

The Gateway Engineers INC

Mr. Messmer has over 30 years of engineering experience in analysis, design, plan/specification development, and project management/personnel supervision for geotechnical, foundation and structural engineering projects in the transportation, industrial, municipal and commercial fields of civil engineering. Throughout his career he has placed an emphasis on quality control and staff training. Mr. Messmer is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Concrete Institute, the American Society of Highway Engineers and the Society of American Military Engineers. He earned his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Messmer was accepted into the Academy of Geo-Professionals in 2013.

Course Title: Site Design: Grading and Drainage

Course Description: This course on site design examines fundamental design considerations that site designers must account for when creating grading and drainage plans. Topics include working with existing topography including floodplains, evaluating the site and testing soil, essential elements of a site design plan, ADA and EPA considerations, designs for grading and drainage, site inspection, and a discussion of real-world site design case studies.

Learners will be able to articulate fundamental site design and evaluation considerations, and identify essential site plan and design elements.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to create site plans that protect the health and welfare of the public by complying with EPA regulations and complying with ADA design requirements for site accessibility.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to create drainage and grading plans and designs that take into account existing topography, hydrological flow patterns, regulatory considerations, and assorted site design challenges and pitfalls.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to describe the role of site inspection as a site plan compliance tool as well as a way of ensuring site safety.
