Seismic Design Concepts and How They Contribute to Resilience

You must take and pass a quiz in order to receive credit. You can take the quiz as many times as needed and there is no time limit on the quiz. Once the quiz is completed, you will be asked to download your certificate.
Videos that qualify for AIA, LACES, ASLA, or CLARB credit will require an extra week for processing.

Each webinar session earns continuing education credit and can be registered for individually. Kevin Moore, is a nationally recognized structural engineer, with expertise in advanced analysis, design, and evaluation of buildings in high seismic regions. He has evaluated more than 400 buildings in his career, with many comprising major general acute medical centers. As a lifelong Californian, Mr. Moore has experience designing buildings and seismic retrofits that comply with some of the most stringent building code requirements in the country. He also has expertise in structural steel design and construction, with unique experience with special steel moment frames, buckling restrained braced frames, and erection engineering consulting. Mr. Moore is a licensed professional engineer, civil engineer, or structural engineer in 15 states.

Course Description: This two-hour course focuses on various seismic design concepts and how they contribute to structural resilience. The course explains structural dynamics and response, conventional seismic design objectives, U.S. building codes and standards, and ASCE 7 seismic design provisions.
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to discuss the science of ground motions, the structural responses from both a single-degree-of-freedom system and a two-degree-of-freedom system, and the potential damages.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to analyze common hysteretic models and explain how hysteretic behavior makes a difference in a structure’s seismic response.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to discuss collapse prevention as the primary seismic design objective and utilize equations to calculate the probability of collapse and the annual probability of collapse.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to differentiate uniform hazard and uniform risk, utilize risk coefficient maps, and comply with related codes and methodologies (IBC, ASCE 7).
