Dr. Jorge Meneses is principal geotechnical engineer with RMA Group. He was a member of the California Seismic Safety Commission appointed by Governor Brown and confirmed by State Senate (2017-2021). He is a reviewer of seismic ground motions for the seismic design of high rise buildings for the City of San Diego, part-time faculty at San Diego State University, Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), member of the Industry Advisory Board of the Department of Structural Engineering at University of California San Diego, member of the Board of Directors of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), President of the EERI San Diego Chapter, past member of the ASCE 7-16 Committee (Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures); member of the ASCE 1 Committee (Geotechnical Analysis, Design, Construction, Inspection and Monitoring of Nuclear Safety-Related Structures); Honorary chair of the ASCE Geo-Institute San Diego Chapter; and member of the Academy of Geo-Professionals.

Course Title: Seismic Code Compliance

Course Description: This six-hour course provides an analysis of earthquake ground motions, applicable building codes, structural resistance and performance, the seismic design process, hazard evaluation, and ground motions of bridges and high-rise buildings.

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to explain the differences between single-degree and multi-degree of freedom systems and analyze earthquake actions, motions, and structural responses.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to locate, reference and comply with seismic provisions of U.S. building codes, including those found in the IBC, IRC, IEBC, ASCE 7-22 standard, and more.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to explain and engage in the seismic design process by identifying site class and determining risk category and seismic design category.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to adopt design strategies to increase strength, ductility and toughness, maintain separation from adjacent buildings, and utilize different protective systems depending on the structure type.
