Course Title: Restoring Natural Areas in Urban Areas

Delivery Method: Live Online

Course Description: This seven-hour course provides design professionals with detailed guidance on restoring natural areas that were lost to development. The course begins with a framework of restoration by discussing natural land systems before development, how much natural area has been lost, and the micro and macro benefits on restoration. Building on this foundational knowledge, the course will discuss site evaluation and specific project designs, including removing sources of disturbances and restoring ecological processes, soil, water, and vegetation. Then, the course explores the regulation and permitting of water resource restoration activities and discusses monitoring techniques, long-term management, and outside-the-box techniques.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to discuss the impact of development by understanding natural land systems prior to development, how much we have lost due to development, and why restoration is so important, both on a micro and macro level.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to set restoration goals and project objectives, evaluate a project site for restoration, remove sources of disturbances, and restore ecological processes, soil, water, and vegetation.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to design long-term project management, institute monitoring techniques, troubleshoot ecological threats, and utilize outside-the-box management techniques.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to explore the regulations and permitting of water resource restoration activities, including those found in the Clean Water Act and other federal laws and state regulatory programs.
