John Barentine, PhD

Principal Consultant, Dark Sky Consulting, LLC

Mr. Barentine is the principal consultant at Dark Sky Consulting, LLC, and was formerly the Director of Public Policy for the International Dark-Sky Association. He earned a Ph.D. degree in Astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin, and he previously held staff positions at the National Solar Observatory, Apache Point Observatory, and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Throughout his career, he has been involved in education and outreach efforts to help increase the public understanding of science. He is a member of the American Astronomical Society and the International Astronomical Union, and he is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. The asteroid (14505) Barentine is named in his honor. His interests outside of astronomy and light pollution research include history, art and architecture, politics, law and current events.

Nancy Clanton, PE, FIES, FIALD, LC, LEED Fellow

CEO, Visibility Innovations, LLC

Ms. Clanton is CEO of Visibility Innovations, LLC, a consulting firm specializing in sustainable and regenerative design. She is a registered professional engineer. Ms. Clanton is a member of the National Academy of Science committee on the assessment of solid state lighting. She is an International Standards Organization (ISO) 205 WG 7, USA delegate. Ms. Clanton received the 2018 Edison Report Lifetime Achievement Award, 2014 American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) Colorado Outstanding Woman Engineer Award, the International Clean Design Award, and the 2021 CU Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award.

April Corey

Associate Designer at Clanton & Associates

Ms. Corey was a team member of Clanton & Associates from 2016 to 2021 and rejoined the team in January 2024. She has been a lighting designer for over a decade with a broad range of experience including streetscapes, transportation, parks, hospitality, education and residential. Additionally, she has worked with cities and government agencies to develop outdoor lighting ordinances, lighting masterplans, standard specifications, and criteria guidelines. Ms. Corey believes that good design includes the careful consideration of environmental impact, including energy use, light pollution, and maintainability, and that the best outcomes are the result of thoughtful collaboration between the entire project team and the community. Ms. Corey holds a bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder with an emphasis in Lighting and Electrical Systems.

Course Title: Residential Lighting Design: Function, Sustainability and Energy Systems

Delivery Method: Live Online 

Course Description: This six-hour course focuses on residential lighting design with a emphasis on function, sustainability, and energy efficiency. The course discusses lighting fundamentals, including light perception, color, and health impacts, as well as exterior and interior lighting design. The course also covers applicable codes and standards, energy-efficient lighting technologies, and methods of maximizing occupant comfort and control through quality interior lighting.

Learning Objectives: 

Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to explain how the various properties of light, including physics, brightness, color, and perception, can affect occupant health.

Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to analyze exterior lighting design strategies that create focus, perspective, depth, and that comply with Dark Sky initiatives and applicable codes and standards.

Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to examine various interior luminaires and controls that meet occupants’ desired lighting functions and complies with applicable codes and standards.

Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to analyze case studies of residential lighting applications to assess the effectiveness of various lighting solutions.
