Alejandra “Alex” Warner
Citywide Access Specialist, City of San Diego/Sustainability and Mobility DepartmentMs. Warner has dedicated over 30 years to planning, designing, and constructing public facilities, with a strong focus on accessible design for the past 25 years. Her goal is to ensure that individuals of all abilities can enjoy the City of San Diego facilities. Ms. Warner has held positions in various departments, including Engineering, Parks, and Public Works, and is currently with the Sustainability and Mobility Department, specifically in the ADA Compliance and Accessibility Section. Her influence extends beyond her current role. Ms. Warner actively collaborates on developing street design guidelines, curb ramp design guidelines and standards, municipal codes, and public rights-of-way policies. Her oversight of the City’s accessibility compliance program and implementation of improvements outlined in the Facilities and the Right-of-Way (ROW) Transition Plan demonstrate her comprehensive approach to accessibility. Ms. Warner holds a master of science degree in Architectural Engineering and is a Certified Access Specialist. She also reviews design and construction documents, provides training, and develops new standards and guidelines to ensure compliance with accessibility regulations. Ms. Warner is a board member of California’s Certified Access Specialists Institute.

Course Title: Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines

Course Description: This three-hour course examines the Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG) and its role in promoting equitable access to pedestrian facilities and elements. The course focuses on the technical requirements and design applications for elements such as pedestrian access routes, curb ramps, and transit stops.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to explain the importance of accessibility laws, regulations and standards, such as PROWAG, in promoting equitable access.
Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to determine the applicability of accessibility regulations based on the project being new construction, an alteration or maintenance.
Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to comply with PROWAG requirements for pedestrian access routes, curb ramps, detectable warning surfaces, and other elements.
Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to analyze the accessibility of transit stops, pedestrian push buttons, and on-street parking spaces under PROWAG standards.
