Speakers

Jeb Barzen

Jeb Barzen, Ecologist at Private Lands Conservation LLC in Spring Green, WI
Mr. Barzen has a B.S. degree from the University of Minnesota and an M.S. degree from University of North Dakota. Both degrees are in Wildlife Biology. For more than 28 years he directed the Field Ecology Department at the International Crane Foundation. That work focused linking crane conservation to private landowners and to meeting the needs of both as well as the needs of ecosystems in which both cranes and people live. Such efforts were based in the concepts of ecosystem restoration. Projects occurred in Wisconsin, China and throughout Southeast Asia. After leaving ICF, Mr. Barzen has used his experience through Private Lands Conservation LLC to focus on developing the economic drivers that will help people implement conservation at ecologically meaningful scales while incorporating ecosystem restoration into those goals.

Corrine Daniels

Nursery Director, Applied Ecological Services, Taylor Creek Restoration Nurseries
Ms. Daniels is the nursery director for Applied Ecological Services’ nursery, Taylor Creek Restoration Nurseries. Her skill set combines strong botanical and field experience with proven business management abilities and an extensive background in multiple aspects of leadership and personnel management. Her ability to meet her clients’ needs and their tough project specifications, while controlling costs and increasing product quality, has contributed greatly to the nursery’s success. She works closely with partners in both the private and public sectors, including nonprofit agencies. In recent years, she has applied her expertise to groundcover selection for large scale restoration projects, including solar facilities. By working her way up from an AES field hand to nursery director, she offers exceptional insight for operations and native plant applications.

Shawn Duke

Cardno

Shawn Duke is a senior staff ecologist at Cardno. He is primarily responsible for developing and implementing ecological restoration plans. His restoration experience includes invasive species control, native planting and seeding, natural shoreline design and establishment, erosion control, green infrastructure and prescribed fire. Mr. Duke also performs natural area management planning; wetland delineations; natural community, fauna and botanical surveys; soil studies; wetland delineations; mitigation projects; environmental monitoring; and endangered species reviews. He has advanced level training in aquatic entomology and limnology, completing field courses in both disciplines and performing macroinvertebrate identification for research studies. He also volunteers with the Huron River Watershed Council to assist with aquatic invertebrate data collection projects.

Keith Summerville PhD.

Levitt Distinguished Professor of Environmental Science, Drake University
Dr. Summerville received his undergraduate degree in Environmental Science from Westminster College, PA in 1995. He spent over a year working as a field ecologist for the Nature Conservancy, Michigan Chapter before attending Miami University (Ohio) to complete his Ph.D. His dissertation was entitled: “Determinants of species richness, abundance, and community composition of forest moths (Lepidoptera) at local and regional scales.” He was hired as an assistant professor of Environmental Science at Drake University in 2002. Dr. Summerville is currently Levitt Distinguished Professor of Environmental Science and Deputy Provost for Enrollment Management at Drake University in Iowa. His teaching interests include restoration ecology, conservation biology, field zoology, and quantitative ecology. His research focuses on developing sustainable management frameworks for forests and prairie systems in North America. Dr. Summerville serves as the editor-in-chief for the Journal of the Lepidopterists’ Society.
