Dr. Stephen J. Souza, Ph.D.
Owner of Clean Waters Consulting, LLC in New JerseyDr. Souza has over 35 years of professional expertise in the management and restoration of water resources. This includes the design and application of a wide array of green infrastructure stormwater management techniques. Dr. Souza received his B.S. degree from the University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth (1974), his M.S. degree from Rutgers University (1976), and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Connecticut (1981). He is the founding partner of Princeton Hydro, serving as the company’s president until his retirement in 2018. Dr. Souza is an instructor and course coordinator for the Rutgers NJAES Office of Continuing Professional Education as well as for Continuing Professional Education Services, LLC. He is also an adjunct professor at Temple University (Department of Landscape and Horticulture – Tyler School of Art and Agriculture).

Course Title: Pond Design and Construction

Course Description: This six-hour course explores the design and construction of ponds, covering pond ecology, construction techniques, fish habitat creation, weed and algae control, and aeration methods. The course will focus on the chemical, biological, hydrologic, and physical interactions defining pond ecology, explaining environmental considerations for pond siting, identifying methods for creating fish habitat, and exploring techniques for controlling weed and algae growth.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to explore the chemical, biological, hydrologic, and physical interactions that define the ecology of a pond and explain the process of eutrophication.
Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to identify environmental considerations when siting a pond and explain the differences between lined and unlined ponds, as well as methods for water level maintenance.
Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to explain techniques for creating and maximizing fish habitat in ponds, including fish stocking recommendations.
Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to explore methods for controlling the growth of nuisance algae blooms and invasive aquatic plants in ponds, including chemical and non-chemical options.
