Course Title: PFAS and Other Persistent Organic Pollutants

Course Description: This six-hour course will explain the science, history and sources of PFAS and their effects on the environment and human health and provide methods of locating and treating PFAS contamination in solids, soils, and water. The course will also discuss relevant environmental laws (SDWA, CERCLA), PFAS litigation, and risks to architects and engineers. The course will conclude with data analysis and a demonstration on how to deploy data to assist in solving the PFAS contamination problem.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify the composition, characteristics and sources (textiles, coatings, fire protection chemicals) of PFAS and discuss their toxicity and persistence.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to discuss the impacts of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) on PFAS contamination, review the ASTM revised standards for PFAS, and understand the potential risk to architects, planners and engineers from PFAS litigation.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to evaluate methods for locating and treating PFAS in solid wastes (incineration and thermal treatments) and soils (excavation and offsite disposal).
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to evaluate techniques for finding and treating PFAS in groundwater, surface water and wastewater, such as groundwater extraction, pumping and treating, membrane filtration, chemical oxidation and more.
