Speakers

Tyler Dawson, PhD PE

Vice President at NTH Consultants, Ltd.

Dr. Dawson is in his 12th year as a pavement, geotechnical, and subsurface utility engineer with NTH Consultants, Ltd. (NTH). He has a wide background in pavement research, management, and design. He has completed research projects for the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) involving pavement design, material characterization, maintenance, and management. He has participated in and led numerous projects which have included pavement surface and structural evaluations, geotechnical explorations, subsurface utility engineering (SUE), and transportation utility coordination. Dr. Dawson’s geotechnical design experience includes earth retention, embankment, road sign and signal, ITS structure, bridge, and other deep and shallow foundations using LRFD and other techniques. He has also led several geophysical investigations to locate buried structures/utilities and subsurface voids.

Course Title: Pavement Design

Course Description: This course examines the functions and criteria of pavements and their design criteria. It covers design methods for new flexible pavement and new rigid pavement and maintenance methods for asphalt and concrete pavements. Sustainability aspects of pavements along with life-cycle assessments.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify pavement design and construction criteria, including material selection, sub-grade soil, use of base, soil improvement, and drainage.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to differentiate flexible pavement and rigid pavement and be able to determine which type of pavement is suitable for different intended uses.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to explain asphalt and concrete preservation, maintenance, and rehabilitation strategies for asphalt and for concrete.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to consider and analyze the sustainability aspects and goals of pavement and identify how sustainability is measured in this context
