Graham Irwin

Essential Habitat Architecture

Principal at Essential Habitat Architecture, San Anselmo, CAMr. Irwin has worked in the construction industry for over 20 years. He has a degree in physics and management from Claremont McKenna College with additional studies in engineering and architecture at Harvey Mudd College and UC Berkeley, and an extensive background in software development. Mr. Irwin recognized the potential of Passive House immediately and was one of the first Passive House consultants certified in the US, as well as a founding board member of Passive House California and the Passive House Alliance, US (PHAUS). He was subsequently trained by the Passivhaus Institut in Darmstadt, Germany as a Passive House project certifier. Mr. Irwin is actively involved in Passive House advocacy, promotion and education. In addition to project-based work, he advises government agencies on energy policy and lectures regularly. He is a USGBC LEED AP, a Build It Green Certified Green Building Professional, and a licensed architect and licensed general contractor in the state of California.

Smita Chandra Thomas

Smita Chandra Thomas is the founder and principal at Energy Shrink, a consulting practice focused on high-performance buildings. Dedicated to enabling energy efficiency in buildings through building science, Smita has more than two decades of experience performing and managing techno-economic for path breaking green buildings. Ms. Thomas is the instructor of the course Decarbonizing Buildings at George Washington University in Washington, DC. She has served as a green building consultant to the World Bank Group for six years. Ms. Thomas is a published author, blogger, and speaker. Ms. Thomas has a master’s degree in building science and has been certified as LEED AP and CPHC.

Lisa White

Associate director and a technical lead for Phius


Ms. White has been with Phius since 2012. Ms. White led the building certification review team for seven years and is an instructor for Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC®) training and WUFI® Passive energy modeling software training. She holds a degree in Environmental Sustainability with a minor in Architecture from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and a Master’s in Energy Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Ms. White has a strong understanding of high-performance building design and how this is integral to the transition to a renewable energy grid. Her Masters’ thesis posed the question “What do Net Zero Buildings Cost the Grid?”, combining the concepts behind how building loads are shaped, how design techniques can alter that shape, and how that ultimately impacts the electricity generation resources needed to meet the load – all while considering the shift to more intermittent, renewable energy resources. Ultimately, this research concludes that energy conservation and demand response in buildings is a critical up-front investment to facilitate this transition.

Course Title: Passive House: Planning, Design and Construction

Course Description: This 6.5 hour live lecture presentation covers energy efficiency of conventional construction, the purpose, principles and development of passive houses, the architectural elements of passive houses, and mechanical and electrical systems in passive houses.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to express the purpose and principles of the Passive House standard and and explain common design features of Passive Houses.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to identify and explain the architectural elements of Passive Houses, including siting, sizing, orientation, super-insulated envelope with minimized thermal bridging, efficient ventilation, , summer shading and cooling strategies, inter solar gain and heat retention strategies, and ultra-efficient lights, fixtures, and appliances.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to describe mechanical and electrical systems in Passive Houses that optimize heat gains and space conditioning and utilize energy-efficient appliances.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to identify strategies to integrate renewable energy technologies into a Passive House design.
