All attendees must log-on through their own email – attendees may not watch together if they wish to earn continuing education credit. HalfMoon Education Inc. must be able to prove attendance if either the attendee or HalfMoon Education Inc. is audited.

Certificates of completion can be downloaded in PDF form upon passing a short quiz. A link to the quiz will be sent to each qualifying attendee immediately after the webinar. The certificate can be downloaded from the Results page of the quiz upon scoring 80% or higher.

Kerry Gerich, PLA, ASLA

Licensed Landscape Architect with EDGE in Columbus, Ohio

Kerry Gerich earned a BSLA from The Ohio State University and studied ornamental horticulture at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania. Kerry’s diverse experience in horticulture and environmental design provides a nuanced perspective to the collaborative process with a focus on sustainability. Most notably projects include The Glass City Riverwalk in Toledo, Ohio. This revitalization project activates the waterfront with new paths and gathering spaces and uses a regionally native plant palette to enhance the natural character of the Maumee River. Other works include multiple ODNR projects that highlight natives in the landscape, creating the opportunity for sustainability education. Kerry is a Master Gardener Volunteer through The Ohio State University Extension Office, and she serves on their native plant propagation committee.

Course Title: Ohio Region Native Plant Workshop: Native Plants in the Managed Landscape

Delivery Method: Live Online

Course Description: This six-hour course focuses on the benefits and utilization of native plants and how they can be incorporated into landscape design. The course explains the benefits of landscaping with native plants and identifies key native plants in Ohio, from trees to grasses. Then the course analyzes the styles, elements and considerations related to planting design before concluding with a discussion on the harms of and alternatives to exotic and invasive plants.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to explore the sustainability and economic benefits of ecological landscapes and native plants, and identify native plants in LEED standards and SITES ratings.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to identify trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses and groundcovers that are native to Ohio, as well as Ohio keystone plants.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to discuss design considerations related to planting design, including the required maintenance, water, environmental impact and cost.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to identify certain invasive and non-native plants, explain how invasive plants spread, and utilize native alternatives and aggressive native plants.
