Speakers

Dr. James T. (Jim) Anderson

Director of the James C. Kennedy Waterfowl and Wetland Center, and a faculty member in the Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation at Clemson University
Dr. Anderson arrived at Clemson in August 2021. Until August 2021 he was a Professor of Wildlife and Fisheries Resources and the Davis-Michael Professor of Forestry and Natural Resources at West Virginia University (WVU).  Dr. Anderson started at WVU in January 1999 as an assistant professor, became associate professor in 2004, and full professor in 2009.  He earned a B.S. in wildlife from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (1991), an M.S. in range and wildlife management through the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University-Kingsville (1994), and a Ph.D. in wildlife science from Texas Tech University (1997). Dr. Anderson’s research centers on wetland and riparian wildlife ecology and wetland/ riparian management. He has published >150 scientific articles, has mentored over 50 graduate students, and garnered >$28 million in grants and contracts.  He has taught or co-taught a diversity of courses including Waterfowl Ecology, Introduction to Wildlife and Fisheries Resources, The Tradition of Hunting, Renewable Resources Policy and Governance, Applied Wetlands Ecology and Management, and Restoration Ecology. He has received multiple department and college awards for outstanding researcher, teacher, and service provider and has received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Texas Tech University and the Outstanding Faculty Award from the West Virginia University Forestry Alumni Association. 

Richard K. Mogensen PWS

President of Mogensen Mitigation, Inc (MMI)
MMI is dedicated to improving the ecological restoration industry and providing the highest level of design and implementation. MMI provides a wide range of stream and wetland related services including stormwater projects as well as rain garden design and installation. Mr. Mogensen has over 30 years of experience in wetlands and environmental consulting. He is a charter member of both the National Mitigation Banking Association (NMBA) and the NC Environmental Restoration Association. He was president of the NMBA from 2002-04. Mr. Mogensen was also an adjunct professor at UNCC from 2013 to 2018 and taught “The Business of Ecological Restoration.”

Jesse Richardson

Professor of Law and the lead land use attorney at the Land Use and Sustainable Development Law Clinic at the West Virginia University College of Law
Before coming to WVU, 
Jesse Richardson was an associate professor at Virginia Tech. His research and experience focuses on land use law and water law. He began his legal career in private practice in his home town of Winchester, Virginia. Mr. Richardson has served on the board of directors of the American Agricultural Law Association where he was both President-Elect and President. Mr. Richardson previously served on the Virginia Water Policy Technical Advisory Committee. He was honored with the 1999 Professional Scholarship Award from the American Agricultural Law Association, the 2004 William E. Wine Award for a history of teaching excellence from Virginia Tech (the highest teaching award granted by the university), and the 2009 University Certificate of Excellence in Outreach.

Jeremy Schewe PWS

Chief Scientific Officer at Ecobot and the owner of Unaka Environmental, LLC
As an entrepreneur, Professional Wetland Scientist, professional ecologist, botanist, environmental consultant, and executive at a tech startup, Mr. Schewe has over 18 years of project management experience in the Americas, South Pacific, Middle East, and Europe for conservation and regulatory natural resource projects. 
He works in the interchange between people and sensitive habitats via wetlands delineations, T&E surveys, biological inventories, botanical inventories, EIS, AIA for PSD applications, 404/401 permits, and more.

Course Title: North Carolina Wetlands Law and Compliance

Delivery Method: Live Online

Course Description: This six-hour course will inform design professionals on current wetlands laws and regulations in North Carolina. The goal of this course is to assist design professionals in complying with all applicable wetlands laws and regulations so that they may be adequately preserved and protected. The course will cover wetland identification, the functions and benefits of wetlands, wetland preservation, restoration, creation and enhancement, current issues with the Clean Water Act, wetlands delineation/determination, and wetland mitigation banking.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify wetlands by the presence of wetland vegetation and soils, and understand the importance of wetlands (flood storage, conveyance, pollution and erosion control, wildlife habitat, etc.) and the underlying hydrology.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to discuss current wetland preservation and restoration strategies and techniques, as well as methods of wetland creation and enhancement.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to define wetland delineation/determination, discuss hyper efficient wetland delineation processes, and review the differences between nationwide and individual permits.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to consider the pros, cons, and functions of wetland mitigation banking and review the financial aspects and valuation of mitigation banks.
