Speakers
Scott Ashley PE
Scott Ashley, PE Director of Operations in Walker Consultants’ New York Office
Mr. Ashley has been with Walker for over ten years and serves as the Director of Operations and Chief Engineer for the New York office. He worked in forensic structural engineering before moving to New York. As Director of Operations, Mr. Ashley oversees all design projects done in the New York office, including structures for large public agencies, medical campuses, and private developments. His projects have ranged in size from a two-level garage with just over 100 spaces to garages with more than 1,100 spaces. His background in engineering, structural design, parking consulting, and project management enables him to guide a team of consultants from different disciplines and to serve as a trusted advisor to his clients, bringing projects from the initial planning stages through approvals, detailed design of foundations, superstructures, durability elements and architecture, and through construction and testing. He is a member of the Precast Concrete Institute and the American Institute of Steel Construction.
Nicholas Frezza Assoc. AIA
Nicholas Frezza, Assoc. AIA Parking Consultant in Walker Consultants’ New York Office and Automation Technologies Leader for Walker.
Mr. Frezza has been with Walker for ten years and worked for another parking specialist firm for several years before. His projects include consulting projects to help clients solve specific design challenges, as well as project management of new structures through all phases of design and through construction. Mr. Frezza has worked in Walker’s Dubai office as well as New York; in the Dubai office he worked on development projects for new neighborhoods, integrating parking into complex larger networks of vehicular and pedestrian circulation, as well as working on underground and podium parking systems with thousands of parking spaces that he integrated into larger campus circulation and structural grids. With a background in architecture, Mr. Frezza is a key resource for code analyses, particularly as they relate to ADA parking requirements. Additionally, he has taken a strong interest in parking technologies, including space-saving automated (“robotic”) parking systems. Mr. Frezza is Walker’s leader for automated parking, providing input on projects all over the country. Mr. Frezza was named as one of the National Parking Association’s “40 Under 40” in 2018.
David Vander Wal PE
David Vander Wal, PE Senior Vice President in Walker Consultants’ New York Office
Mr. Vander Wal has been with Walker for over 30 years, serving as a senior project manager as well as in managerial capacities. Prior to joining Walker he worked for a structural engineering firm specializing in public transportation. Currently the design principal for Walker’s New York office, Mr. Vander Wal brings a wide range of experience in parking design, including structural engineering, project management, conceptual and master planning, and restoration. He has been involved in designing parking structures for governments, airports, mixed-use developments, casinos, hospitals, and universities. Mr. Vander Wal has a strong interest in the unique challenges of designing user-friendly parking on constrained sites where vehicular access, pedestrian circulation, exit queuing and tight structural grids make it difficult to meet efficiency goals and user goals simultaneously. He has worked in countries all over the world, as well as in the Metro area, to create high-functioning but cost- effective solutions. Mr. Vander Wal is licensed in six states and is on the board of the New York State Parking Association as well as being a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers.
