Navigating the Permit Process and Remodeling under the Minnesota Residential Code

You must take and pass a quiz in order to receive credit. You can take the quiz as many times as needed and there is no time limit on the quiz. Once the quiz is completed, you will be asked to download your certificate.
Videos that qualify for AIA, LACES, ASLA, or CLARB credit will require an extra week for processing.

Each webinar session earns continuing education credit and can be registered for individually. This webinar is open to the public and offers 7.5 PDHs to professional engineers and 7.5 non-HSW continuing education hours to architects in Minnesota. The Minnesota Board does not pre-approve courses and activities, however to the best of our knowledge this course/activity meets the continuing education requirements outlined in MN Statute 326.107. Final discretion is up to the Board.

Mr. Karow is the CEO of Code Educational Opportunities providing education based on current building codes. He also provides service as a building code specialist for design professionals and stakeholders in the industry. Mr. Karow has an extensive background in developing and presenting various types of building code and related seminars. Previous career paths included staff instructor with the International Code Council and with the State of Minnesota Codes and Standards Division. He has instructed in a Building Inspection Technology program at a local community college. Mr. Karow is a certified building official in Minnesota and holds ICC certifications as a Certified Building Official, ICC Plans Examiner, ICC Building Inspector and ICC Building Code Specialist.

Course Description: This course examines what design professionals need to know when working on residential remodeling projects in Minnesota. Topics include identifying municipal requirements, the permitting process, plan submittal and review, and solutions to specific issues such as basement additions and conversions, attic renovations, structural concerns in old houses, energy efficiency, and more.
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify the requirements of the municipality and building official when they are in receipt of a building permit application, and describe the criteria for accepting or rejecting the permit.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to identify which permits are required, what types of work are exempt from permits, and explain how to accurately and completely fill out the application.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to explore solutions to issues under the Minnesota IRC, including what to do when the code doesn’t specifically address an issue, and how to propose alternative methods to building officials.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to examine Minnesota code requirements for basement additions and conversions, attic renovations, safety glazing, reroofing, foundation insulation, and converting from single-family to two-family dwelling.
