This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 6.0 PDHs for professional engineers and 6.0 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects in New York.

Mr. Black is a Senior Consulting Engineer at Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc., specializing in Building Codes and the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. Professional experience includes providing design requirements and developing code reports for various occupancy types, creating Life Safety Drawings using AutoCAD, Revit, and Bluebeam PDF. Previous roles include Fire Protection Engineer at Cosentini Associates, managing engineering support for hospitals and ensuring compliance with life safety measures, and Approvals Engineer at FM Global, overseeing advanced suppression systems and flood mitigation project approvals. Additional engineering experience includes roles at UTC Aerospace Systems as a Senior Project Engineer and at UTC Power as a Product Safety & Certification Engineer. Kevin M. Black holds a Master of Science in Fire Protection Engineering and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

CLM Engineering is a multi-faceted engineering firm offering construction management and engineering, and forensic investigations. Mr. Moskowitz is a member of the American Society of Safety Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers. Mr. Moskowitz earned his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Maine, his Master of Business Administration from the University of Bridgeport, his Master in Construction Administration from Columbia University, and his Certificate in Mediation from Quinnipiac College School of Law.

Course Title: Navigating Select Codes of the 2025 Existing Building Code of New York State

Delivery Method: Live Online 

Course Description: This four-hour course examines key provisions of the 2025 Existing Building Code of New York State (EBCNYS), which is based on the International Existing Building Code, that govern alterations, occupancy changes, and compliance methods for existing buildings. It reviews code pathways for renovation projects and explains how requirements for life safety, egress, and construction safeguards are applied when modifying existing structures.

Learning Objectives: 

Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to explain the scope, definitions, and compliance methods established in Chapters 1–3 of the EBCNYS.

Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to distinguish between Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 alterations and determine applicable code requirements for each.

Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to analyze code requirements related to changes in occupancy classification and evaluate impacts on means of egress and building systems.

Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to identify construction safeguards required to reduce risk during renovation activities, including provisions related to fire safety and occupant egress.
