Victoria Chekene, GC
Principal, Construction Consultant, and General Contractor with AVELAR in Walnut Creek, CAMs. Chekene is highly skilled in diagnosing and solving building envelope and waterproofing challenges across diverse project types — from condominiums and single-family homes to commercial properties and educational facilities. She has developed particular expertise in alpine and mountain resort construction, with extensive experience throughout the Lake Tahoe, Truckee, and Mammoth Lakes regions. Ms. Chekene serves as an expert witness, providing deposition testimony and delivering comprehensive analyses for both plaintiff and defense litigation support. Her work encompasses forensic investigations, code-compliance reviews, cost estimating, reconstruction document services, and preparing detailed presentations for legal proceedings. Beyond her technical expertise, Ms. Chekene is a passionate champion for women in construction, advocating for greater representation and mentorship in the industry. Her exceptional focus, professionalism, and wide-ranging expertise make her an invaluable asset and a well-respected leader in her field. Ms. Chekene received her Bachelor of Science in Commerce from Santa Clara University, Leavey School of Business, in 2003. She holds a California State Contractor’s License, Class B (#1046747), issued in 2018.
Juan Villanueva
Construction Administrator & Waterproofing Consultant with AVELAR in Walnut Creek, CASince 2004, Mr. Villanueva has worked in building envelope design. His experience includes design and specification of below-grade, roofing, exterior cladding, and exterior decks, and extensive construction administration experience in commercial and residential construction. Mr. Villanueva has also performed construction administration for overseas United States-owned buildings, including U.S. Embassies in New Zealand and Bolivia and the American Cultural Center in Alexandria, Egypt. He received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from California State University, Fresno in 2004. Mr. Villanueva has completed training for below-grade inspection of installed assemblies for CETCO, GCP Applied Technologies, and CIM Industries, as well as split-slab assemblies and traffic coatings.

Course Description: This six-hour course focuses on strategies used to design and construct moisture-resistant buildings in California. The course explores moisture movement in and around buildings, the prevention of water intrusion, and the effects of moisture on building systems and occupant health. The course examines design solutions for doors, windows, walls, roofs, and mechanical systems to control moisture within buildings.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to identify sources of exterior and interior moisture and condensation and discuss how air and moisture move within buildings and their effects.
Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to design moisture-resistant foundations, explain how to grade sites to drain water from foundations and utilize foundation drainage systems.
Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to apply best practices for moisture management in wall cladding and roofing systems, including the utilization of air, vapor, and waterproofing barriers.
Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to identify and comply with the moisture-related provisions of the 2025 California Building Standards Code, including applicable sections of the CBC, CRC, California Energy Code, WUI Code, and CALGreen.
