The 2020 MN residential code is based on the 2018 International Residential Code IRC. The intent of this code is to provide a stand-alone code for 1 and 2 family dwellings as well as townhouses in a format that’s easily navigated.

This one-day webinar will detail the nuances of the residential code and appropriate application of the document.

Mr. Karow is the CEO of Code Educational Opportunities providing education based on current building codes. He also provides service as a building code specialist for design professionals and stakeholders in the industry. Mr. Karow has an extensive background in developing and presenting various types of building code and related seminars. Previous career paths included staff instructor with the International Code Council and with the State of Minnesota Codes and Standards Division. He has instructed in a Building Inspection Technology program at a local community college. Mr. Karow is a certified building official in Minnesota and holds ICC certifications as a Certified Building Official, ICC Plans Examiner, ICC Building Inspector and ICC Building Code Specialist.

Course Title: Minnesota Residential Code

Course Description: This 7-hour course provides design professionals with an in-depth analysis of the Minnesota Residential Code. The course begins with a discussion on the history and development of the International Residential Code and how it has been adoption, amended and enforced by jurisdictions in Minnesota. The main focus of the course are chapters 2-11 of the code. Each chapter will be analyzed and code compliance techniques will be explained.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to discuss the history and development of the International Residential Code, the adoption and enforcement of the code in Minnesota jurisdictions, recent and anticipated code amendments, and the future of the code.

Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to comply with chapter 3 of the Minnesota Residential Code, including provisions related to fire-resistant construction, unit separation, firestopping and means of egress.

Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to comply with chapter 4 of the Minnesota Residential Code, including provisions related to soils and drainage, footing size, foundation size, and foundation drainage.

Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to explore and reference chapters 5-11 of the Minnesota Residential Code: floors, wall construction, wall covering, roof-ceiling construction, roof assemblies, and energy efficiency.
