LID and Rain Garden Basics: The ‘What’ and ‘Why’

You must take and pass a quiz in order to receive credit. You can take the quiz as many times as needed and there is no time limit on the quiz. Once the quiz is completed, you will be asked to download your certificate.
Videos that qualify for AIA, LACES, ASLA, or CLARB credit will require an extra week for processing.

- Methods of capturing and infiltrating runoff: infiltration trenches to bioswales
- Dealing with raindrops where they fall is key to reducing flooding and taking stress off municipal infrastructure

These webinars are open to the public and are each designed to qualify for 2.0 PDHs for professional engineers, 2.0 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects, and 2.0 HSW continuing education hours for landscape architects in all states that allow this learning method. Please refer to specific state rules to determine eligibility.

Named by Landscape Ontario as 2020 and 2021’s Garden Communicator of the Year, gardening has been Mr. James’ hobby and profession for over 40 years. A graduate of Niagara Parks School of Horticulture, a Master Gardener, writer, and teacher, he focuses on eco-gardening techniques, which makes sense since he grew up surrounded by nature. He has spoken from the Maritimes to Seattle and landscaped from Nova Scotia to California. Mr. James has had the honor to be part of creating the Ontario Landscape Tree Planting Guide, the Grow-Me-Instead guide, the Ontario Horticultural Apprenticeship Curriculum and the national Red Seal Occupational Standard, and the Master Gardeners Reference Manual. He has participated in chairing the Environmental Stewardship Committee for Landscape Ontario, the Environmental Committee for the Perennial Plant Association, moderating the Master Gardeners of Ontario Facebook page, judging the All-American Selections garden competition and Hamilton’s Monarch Awards. Mr. James has been the Ontario spokesperson for Garden Days Canada and he has appeared on many radio shows and on television and has instructed at the college level for 17 years. He owns ‘Sean James Consulting & Design’.

Course Description: This two-hour course will explore the principles of Low Impact Development (LID) and explain the function, benefits and design of rain gardens. The course will analyze methods of capturing, storing and infiltrating rainwater and runoff.
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to explain the purpose of Low Impact Development and why capturing rain where it falls, holding it, and allowing it to infiltrate is a benefit for the environment.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to adopt methods of capturing and infiltrating runoff, from trenches to bioswales.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to reduce some of the stress put on municipal infrastructure and reduce flooding through LID practices.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to discuss the frequency and intensity of modern storm events and effectively communicate the benefits of LID to the public.
