 Webinar Instructions

All attendees must log-on through their own email – attendees may not watch together if they wish to earn continuing education credit. HalfMoon Education Inc. must be able to prove attendance if either the attendee or HalfMoon Education Inc. is audited.

Certificates of completion can be downloaded in PDF form upon passing a short quiz. A link to the quiz will be sent to each qualifying attendee immediately after the webinar. The certificate can be downloaded from the Results page of the quiz upon scoring 80% or higher.

Webinars are presented via GoToWebinar, an easy-to-use application that can be run on most systems and tablets. Instructions and login information will be provided in an email sent close to the date of the webinar. It is highly recommended that you download, install and test the application before the webinar begins by clicking on the link in the email.

Continuing Education Credit Information
These webinars each offer 2.0/3.0 PDHs to professional engineers and 2.0/3.0 HSW
continuing education hours to architects in all states. These webinars offer 2.0/3.0
HSW continuing education hours to landscape architects licensed in all states,
except Florida, New Jersey, or North Carolina.

HalfMoon Education is an approved continuing education sponsor for engineers in
Florida (Provider No. 0004647), Indiana (License No. CE21700059), Maryland, New
Jersey (Approval No. 24GP00000700), North Carolina (S-0130), and North Dakota.
HalfMoon Education is deemed an approved continuing education sponsor for
New York engineers, architects, and landscape architects via its registration with
the American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System (Regulations
of the Commissioner §68.14(i)(2), §69.6(i)(2), and §79-1.5(i)(2)). Courses approved
by the AIA/CES qualify for Florida and New Jersey architects. Other states do not
preapprove continuing education providers or courses.

These courses have been approved by the American Institute of Architects
Continuing Education System for 2.0/3.0 LU|HSW (Sponsor No. J885) and the
Landscape Architect Continuing Education System for 2.0/3/0 HSW PDHs. Only full
participation is reportable to the AIA/CES and LA CES.

The Association of State Floodplain Managers has approved these courses for
2.0/3.0 CECs.

These courses are approved by the International Code Council for .2/.3 CEUs in the
specialty area of Sitework (Preferred Provider No. 1232).

Completion certificates will be awarded to participants who complete this event,
respond to prompts, and earn a passing score (80%) on the quiz that follows the
presentation (multiple attempts allowed).

Speakers

Bill Simpson, P.E.

Geotechnical Structure Design Specialist at Gradelta Engineering

Mr. Simpson founded Gradelta Engineering in 2020 with the intent to help clients better understand the combination of geotechnical and structural engineering that he has worked with for the past 20 years. He earned his B.S.C.E. and M.S.C.E. degrees from Georgia Institute of Technology. He currently provides engineering services to contractors and fellow engineers for earth structure pricing, along with the plans and calculations needed for construction. He frequently consults with clients regarding the optimal structure type and location on the construction site to minimize risk and maximize useable space. He also works in the education sector providing not just seminars such as this one, but also acting as a subject matter expert creating study guide and test prep content for the NCEES Professional Civil Engineer exam. Mr. Simpson has also worked with lawyers and insurance companies during forensic investigation and lawsuits surrounding retaining walls and slope failures. His hope is that through the instructional services that he currently provides, slopes will remain stable and retaining wall failure will be eliminated.

Course Title: Internal Design of MSE Walls and Geosynthetics

Delivery Method: Live Online

Course Description: This three hour course will cover the design of and materials used in the construction of mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining walls. It will examine geosynthetics, wall properties, code requirements, equations and calculations, and case histories of MSE failures that highlight what NOT to do.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able identify and describe the materials that are used in the construction of a MSE wall, which include geosynthetics.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to compare geosynthetics that are used in MSE walls by cost, strength and applications.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to describe how MSE walls interact with other site features such as buildings and utilities, and they will be able to discuss the effects of water on the design and stability of the wall.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to work with calculations for internal stability of a MSE wall and be able to reference and understand code requirements for MSE walls.
