All attendees must log-on through their own email – attendees may not watch together if they wish to earn continuing education credit. HalfMoon Education Inc. must be able to prove attendance if either the attendee or HalfMoon Education Inc. is audited.

Certificates of completion can be downloaded in PDF form upon passing a short quiz. A link to the quiz will be sent to each qualifying attendee immediately after the webinar. The certificate can be downloaded from the Results page of the quiz upon scoring 80% or higher.

This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 3.0 PDHs for professional engineers and land surveyors and 3.0 continuing education hours for licensed architects in Illinois. 

The American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System has approved this course for 3.0 Elective LUs (Sponsor No. J885). Only full participation is reportable to the AIA/CES. 

Completion certificates will be awarded to participants who complete this event and earn a passing score (80%) on the quiz that follows the presentation (multiple attempts allowed).

Sylvia Michas

Of Counsel Attorney at Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP

Ms. Michas focuses her practice on land use, tax increment financing (TIF), government procurement, and government relations. She has extensive experience representing property owners and real estate developers in securing all types of land use entitlements, including planned developments, zoning amendments, special uses, variations, and public way approvals for a wide range of commercial and residential projects. Ms. Michas has worked on behalf of clients in complex residential and commercial zoning matters throughout the City of Chicago, including appearing before the Chicago City Council Committee on Zoning, Chicago Plan Commission, the Chicago Zoning Board of Appeals, and numerous city departments. In addition, Ms. Michas advises clients on government procurement and compliance regulations, laws, and policies at the local, state, and federal levels. She handles a variety of matters relating to certification and participation of disadvantaged, minority, and women business enterprises (D/M/WBEs) in the government contracting process. She also assists clients in preparing D/M/WBE certification applications, assessing certification eligibility, and drafting appeals of certification eligibility decisions.

Course Title: Illinois Land Use Law for Building Professionals

Course Description: This three-hour course provides an overview of Illinois land use law for building professionals. The course covers topics such as land use and comprehensive planning, subdivision platting, zoning, restrictive covenants/deed restrictions, traffic/parking regulations, and nuisance law. Additionally, the course explains how to participate in the land use planning process, how to seek rezoning and variances, and land use decision appeals.

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to discuss the concepts of land use and comprehensive planning, and explore the land use planning process in Illinois.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to understand the principles of subdivision platting and zoning regulations to effectively comply with Illinois land use laws.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to navigate and comply with restrictive convenants and/or deed restrictions, traffic and parking regulations, and nuisance laws.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to explain the process and identify the requirements for appealing land use decisions and for seeking rezoning and variances in Illinois.
