Speakers

Dr. Stephen J. Souza, Ph.D.

Owner of Clean Waters Consulting, LLC in New Jersey

Dr. Souza has over 35 years of professional expertise in the management and restoration of water resources. This includes the design and application of a wide array of green infrastructure stormwater management techniques. He received his B.S. from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth (1974), his M.S. from Rutgers University (1976), and his Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut (1981). Dr. Souza is the founding partner of Princeton Hydro, serving as the company’s president until his retirement in 2018. He is an instructor and course coordinator for the Rutgers NJAES Office of Continuing Professional Education as well as for Continuing Professional Education Services, LLC. Dr. Souza is also an Adjunct Professor at Temple University (Department of Landscape and Horticulture – Tyler School of Art and Agriculture).

Course Title: How to Naturalize an Existing Stormwater Detention/Retention Basin

Course Description: This course examines the principles and practice of transforming traditional dry-bottom basins into naturalized basins that improve water quality and provide a host of environmental benefits.

Learners will be able to describe how to change the size and shape of detention basins as part of the naturalization effort, and they will be able to explain what benefits this may produce.

Learners will be able to describe how to change inlet and outflow of detention basins as part of the naturalization effort, and they will be able to explain what benefits this may produce.

Learners will be able to describe how to improve basin soils and select native plantings can promote diffusion and infiltration of stormwater.
