Certificates of completion can be downloaded in PDF form upon passing a short quiz. A link to the quiz will be sent to each qualifying attendee immediately after the webinar. The certificate can be downloaded from the Results page of the quiz upon scoring 80% or higher.

This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 3.0 PDHs for professional engineers, 3.0 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects, and 3.0 HSW continuing education hours for landscape architects in all states that allow this learning method. Daniel P. Messmer, P.E., D. GE

Project Manager with The Gateway Engineers, Inc., in Pittsburgh

Mr. Messmer has over 30 years of engineering experience in analysis, design, plan/specification development, and project management/personnel supervision for geotechnical, foundation and structural engineering projects in the transportation, industrial, municipal and commercial fields of civil engineering. Throughout his career he has placed an emphasis on quality control and staff training. Mr. Messmer is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Concrete Institute, the American Society of Highway Engineers and the Society of American Military Engineers. He earned his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Messmer was accepted into the Academy of Geo-Professionals in 2013.

Course Title: How to Calculate Soil Volumes for Cut and Fill

Delivery Method: Live Online 

Course Description: This three-hour course focuses on the strategies and principles for accurately estimating soil volumes in cut and fill operations. The course explores volumetric estimation techniques, managing disturbed soils, and balancing cut and fill to optimize project efficiency. The course also explores site mapping for excavation and embankment, evaluates software tools for calculations, and addresses handling fill materials and spoil disposal.

Learning Objectives: 

Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to explain the importance of determining accurate estimates of soil volumes for cutting and filling, and describe the impact this information has on site topography, grading and drainage.

Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to explain and apply the principles of volumetric estimation for soils to achieve equality between cut and fill.

Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to evaluate various types of soils, understand the importance of moving soil once, and discuss how to handle disturbed soils.

Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to explain how a site is mapped for excavation and embankment, evaluate software for cut and fill calculations, and properly dispose of spoils.
