All attendees must log-on through their own email – attendees may not watch together if they wish to earn continuing education credit. HalfMoon Education Inc. must be able to prove attendance if either the attendee or HalfMoon Education Inc. is audited. 

Certificates of completion can be downloaded in PDF form upon passing a short quiz. A link to the quiz will be sent to each qualifying attendee immediately after the webinar. The certificate can be downloaded from the Results page of the quiz upon scoring 80% or higher.

Michael Alvino, AICP

Associate at TYLin in Washington D.C.

Mr. Alvino brings over 15 years of experience in active transportation facility design and network planning. For nine years Mr. Alvino oversaw the Trails Program at the District of Columbia Department of Transportation. He has led several successful urban trail projects focused on improving and connecting communities including the Metropolitan Branch Trail, the Anacostia River Trail, the Rock Creek Trail, as well as numerous pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure projects. He has developed projects from feasibility, through design, to construction, and maintenance. From 2020 through 2024 Mr. Alvino served on the Steering Committee of the Capital Trails Coalition, which seeks to create a world-class network of multi-use trails through the Washington D.C. region. Mr. Alvino excels at bringing together stakeholders to find implementable solutions. He holds a Masters of Urban Planning and Policy from the University of Illinois at Chicago and resides in Washington D.C.

Robert Searns

Robert Searns and Associates, LLC in Littleton, CO

Mr. Searns has a five-decade history of visualizing, planning, and getting trails and greenway projects built. He was project director of Denver’s Platte River and Mary Carter Greenways, which were both national-award-winning projects. He helped plan the Grand Canyon NP Greenway and played a key role in planning the Memphis Wolf River Greenway. He served as national chair of American Trails, was a founding member of the Board of The World Trails Network and was a delegate to the White House Great America Outdoors Conference. He authored Beyond Greenways: The Next Step for City Trails and Walking Routes (One of 10 “Best Books of 2023” from the American Society of Landscape Architects/ The Dirt) and co-authored Greenways: A Guide to Planning Design and Development, both published by Island Press. He currently writes for the Island Press Short Form Project. He has written for Public Square, Landscape Architecture, American Trails, LA China and Planning magazines and the Island Press Urban Resilience Project. He has hosted numerous Webinars, interviewed on multiple podcasts, and has been a keynote speaker as well as a trainer for the U.S. National Park Service, American Planning Association and the Urban Land Institute. He chaired American Trails and was a founder of The World Trails Network. He was also a delegate to the America’s Great Outdoors White House conclave (President Obama). He resides, writes, hikes and bikes near Denver, Colorado.

Jeremy Wimpey

Principal at Applied Trails Research in State College, PA

Dr. Wimpey is project manager and research lead providing trail and outdoor recreation planning, design, assessment and management services to a variety of public land management agencies and private landholders. He specializes in training, community involvement and geospatial services for planning and management activities. Dr. Wimpey serves as adjunct research faculty at The Pennsylvania State University: College of Health and Human Development, Recreation, Park and Tourism Management Department. He earned his Ph.D. degree in Geospatial Environmental Analysis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, VA.

Course Title: Fundamentals of Trails and Greenways Design

Delivery Method: Live Online 

Course Description: This six-hour course explores the fundamentals of trail and greenways design, including urban trail design, green infrastructure, micromobility, and public health. The course focuses on planning and engineering considerations, surface types, ecological integration, and the role of trails in climate adaptation and equitable access. The course also examines sustainable trail development, user conflict resolution, and the multidisciplinary nature of greenway projects.

Learning Objectives: 

Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to identify and utilize design components of urban trails and greenways, including wayfinding, furnishings, and intersections.

Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to discuss the ecological functions of greenways related to habitat restoration, stormwater management, and climate resilience.

Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to compare the advantages and disadvantages of natural surface trails and examine sustainable practices for constructing and managing trails.

Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to discuss strategies for resolving user conflicts and promoting micromobility travel.
