Course Title: Foundation Design, Construction and Repair in Karst Terrain

Delivery Method: Live Online

Course Description: This course examines the characterists of karst terrain, which usually has rocky ground, underground rivers caves and sinkholes, how to evaluate karst sites, selecting and constructing a foundation, and how to repair a foundation that suffered damage due to karst-related causes.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to describe the characteristics of karst terrain and how those characteristics affect structural foundations.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to identify how karst sites need to be evaluated prior to designing and constructing a foundation, including specific site exploration techniques, soil sampling and testing, and data interpretation and subsurface models.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to describe the methodology of constructing a foundation in karst terrain, including site grading, dewatering and drainage, excavation, and mitigating the effects of karst features.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to apply sinkhole repair techniques, cap/compaction grouting, and underpinning techniques to repair damaged foundations in karst regions.
