Course Description: This course examines structure, foundation, slab, basement and retaining wall loading, soil properties, building codes, foundation-slab-wall design and construction, slab damage and repair alternatives, and foundation wall damage and repair alternatives.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to explain the importance of examining and determining soil mechanics and properties on site in order to establish foundation design strategies to carry required loads.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to apply acquired design and construction techniques for shallow, deep and intermediate foundations, and they will be able to identify types of basement and retaining walls and their unique construction and design requirements.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to identify and describe common causes of foundation slab damage, including settlement, expansive soils, subsurface erosion, frost heave, soil shrinkage and utility failures, and learners will be able to determine appropriate repair methods for these kinds of failures.
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to identify and describe common causes of foundation wall damage, including settlement, expansive soils, frost loading, soil shrinkage, utility failures, and poor drainage, and learners will be able to determine appropriate repair methods for these kinds of failures.
