The Gateway Engineers INC

Mr. Messmer has over 30 years of engineering experience in analysis, design, plan/specification development, and project management/personnel supervision for geotechnical, foundation and structural engineering projects in the transportation, industrial, municipal and commercial fields of civil engineering. Throughout his career he has placed an emphasis on quality control and staff training. Mr. Messmer is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Concrete Institute, the American Society of Highway Engineers and the Society of American Military Engineers. He earned his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Messmer was accepted into the Academy of Geo-Professionals in 2013.

Course Title: Foundation and Retaining Wall Damage and Repair: Science, Materials and Techniques

Delivery Method: Live Online

Course Description: This course analyzes and evaluates damage to foundations, retaining walls, and slabs by utilizing an understanding of the science of soils and structures. The course will instruct design professionals on how to identify and evaluate damages and provide guidance in the repair and rehabilitation of these structures.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to review the science of structures and soils and how they interact based on soil properties, bearing capacity, soil settlement, and the presence of water or ice.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to analyze the features, materials, and functionality of shallow foundations, slab foundations, basements, retaining walls, and specialty features such as walk-outs and partially-exposed foundations.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to evaluate damage to foundations, retaining walls, and slabs through proper inspection, monitoring, and assessment and identify frost heave, cracking, poor drainage, shrinkage, expansive soils, and other damages.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to review stabilization and repair techniques for foundations, retaining walls, and slabs, including piers, piles, carbon fibers, soil tiebacks, soldier beams, crack repair, underpinning and more.
