Jessica Mandrick, PE, SE, LEED AP

Partner at Gilsanz Murray Steficek LLP in New York City

Jessica Mandrick, has provided structural engineering services for numerous buildings located in hurricane and flood hazard areas. She served on the ASCE 24 Urban Flood Study team after Hurricane Sandy, assisted with the DOB Sandy recovery efforts, and was a team member on the 2016 Earthquake Reconnaissance trip to Taiwan after the Meinong Earthquake. Ms. Mandrick is a member of the ASCE 24 Flood Resistant Design & Construction Committee, served as the Secretary-Balloteer-Historian for the ASCE 7-22 Flood Load Subcommittee and assisted with edits to Appendix G of the New York City Building Code. She also serves on the Editorial Board of STRUCTURE Magazine. Ms. Mandrick holds dual degrees from Swarthmore College – one in Engineering and the other in Studio Art. She is a Professional Civil Engineer in New York, a Registered Structural Engineer in California, and a LEED AP. She enjoys sailing the not so high seas.

Course Title: Flood-Resistant Design and Construction

Course Description: This course focuses on flood-resistant design strategies and construction methods. The course begins with foundational information related to types of floods, flood maps, damage, zones and the NFIP before closely analyzing code-compliant design provisions and construction methods for flood-resistant buildings (ASCE and NFIP). The course addresses specific flood-related risks, flood-resistant materials, floodproofing, and considerations for MEP systems.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to adopt compliance strategies for designing and constructing flood-resistant buildings under ASCE 24-14 and the NFIP related to elevation requirements, foundation requirements, use of fill, anchorage, connections, breakaway walls, and more.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to address specific flood-related risks such as protection from debris and working in areas subject to erosion, mudslides, and high-velocity flows.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to utilize wet and dry floodproofing techniques and flood-resistant materials. Learners will be able to review specific materials for flood hazard areas, including concrete, masonry, wood and steel finishes.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to identify the risks and considerations related to electrical, mechanical, and plumbing systems in flood-prone areas.
