Randy Scovill

Fire Plan Review, Inspector

Randy Scovill has more than 15 years of experience in the fire protection industry. He started out as a pipe fitter and went to community college to learn AutoCAD to perform fire sprinkler system design and hydraulic calculations. Mr. Scovill has designed, installed, and serviced residential, commercial, and industrial fire protection systems. This includes ground up buildings, tenant improvements, retrofits, and additions.

During his time as a pipe fitter and designer he obtained his undergraduate degree in architecture (Woodbury University) and master’s degree in architecture (Columbia University). Most recently, Mr. Scovill was the Fire Plan Checker and Inspector for Redondo Beach, CA and he is currently a Campus Fire Marshal for the California State University Office of the Chancellor, Office of Fire Safety.

Course Description: This 6.5-hour course for design professionals provides a discussion on the history, purpose and development of fire sprinkler systems and the applicable building codes and standards, identifies NFPA 13 definitions, new technology and compliance methods, reviews underground piping, system components and hardware, compares the different types of systems and their requirements, and discusses additional installation requirements.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to discuss the history, development and purpose of fire sprinkler systems and review building code requirements and design and installation standards (IFC, CFC, NFPA, etc.)

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to understand the definitions and new technology of NFPA 13 and comply with general requirements regarding level of protection, hazard classifications, water supply, additives, etc.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to review the different sprinkler system types and their requirements, such as wet pipe systems, dry pipe systems, preaction, deluge and combined systems, mist, foam, and others.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to examine underground pipes, fittings, connections and installation considerations, as well as system components and hardware (sprinklers, above-ground piping, fittings, joints and valves).
