After practicing complex commercial and environmental litigation for ten years, Ms. Valastro recently become a Business Law Professor at Louisiana State University – Shreveport and a consultant for a prominent litigation funder.  Her research agenda includes greenwashing and legal ethics issues.  Ms. Valastro graduated first in her college class from Texas Tech University, summa cum laude with honors, with a B.A. degree in Spanish and Political Science and received her J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from Texas Tech University School of Law.

Course Title: Ethical Issues in Sustainable Design: Understanding and Preventing Greenwashing

Course Description: This course examines the unethical practice of greenwashing – the practice of marketing a product as sustainable, when in fact it does not have green qualities. This course covers how to recognize such false or misleading claims and how, and why, to avoid committing them.

Learners will be able to define the practice of greenwashing and explain why it is harmful.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to explain the criteria used to identify sustainable products and processes that they can apply to meet their clients sustainable project goals.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to identify and describe the criteria used to identify greenwashed building materials and practices, so designers and contractors do not fall prey to false claims.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to discuss anti-greenwashing initiatives that are underway and developing that protect designers, contractors, and, ultimately, consumers and the environment.
