Speakers

Steven Trinkaus, PE

Principal at Trinkaus Engineering, LLC, in Southbury, CT

Mr. Trinkaus is an internationally recognized expert in the field of low impact development, having presented at many ASCE/EWRI international conferences and many other regional conferences and workshops on LID and water quality issues. He has been an invited presenter and consultant in Taiwan, China, and South Korea. He has also presented on Sustainable Stormwater at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. Mr. Trinkaus has written LID design manuals for the Towns of Tolland, Plainville, Harwinton, East Granby, and Morris, Connecticut. He has designed many types of LID treatment systems for a variety of residential and commercial applications. Mr. Trinkaus is chair of the EWRI LID Guidance Document Task Committee and primary author of the Committee’s national guidance document on adopting LID standards. Mr. Trinkaus is a licensed professional engineer in Connecticut and Maryland. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Forest Management in 1980 from the University of New Hampshire. He has more than 38 years of experience in the land development field, more than 19 years of experience designing low impact development treatment systems, and six years of experience writing LID regulations and design manuals.

Course Description: This course examines erosion and sediment control requirements and practices, goals and selection of erosion and sediment control practices, non-structural and structural control practices, stream and bank stabilization techniques, and sediment traps and sediment basins.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to utilize practices that minimize project site disturbances that cause erosion and preserve native vegetation.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to control erosion and control sedimentation on construction sites with structural best practices, including earthen dikes, pipe drains, silt fences, check dams, drainage swales, subsurface drains, and berms.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to comply with federal Environmental Protection Agency and state erosion and sediment control requirements.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to control site disturbances with the use of non-structural best practices, including temporary and permanent seeding, sodding, mulching use of geotextiles, chemical soil stabilization, and buffer zones.

Learning Objective 5:
Learners will be able to establish practices to protect stream banks from erosion and be able to explain how to stabilize and repair damaged stream banks.

Learning Objective 6:
Learners will be able to discuss permanent stormwater management practices by understanding the basics of hydrology, rate versus volume control, and using ponds, infiltration practices, and bioretention.
