Erosion Control & Stormwater Specialist with EJ PrescottMr. Everhart’s current title is Erosion Control & Stormwater Specialist. Since joining EJ Prescott, he has spoken at national and regional conferences and stormwater & erosion Control workshops. Mr. Everhart’s articles have been published in Stormwater Solutions Magazine in 2019, 2022 and 2023. He holds a diploma in Architectural and Civil Technologies, and has over 25 years of experience in grading, drainage, and erosion control design and consulting.
Michael Fortuna
New York Area Sales Manager for ACO, Inc., in Mentor, OHMr. Fortuna’s nearly 50 years’ experience in the construction industry brings extensive and diverse knowledge of many facets of commercial and residential construction. A fourth generation home builder and land developer, Mr. Fortuna designed homes that work in unison with the land, creating ecologically friendly designs which focus on energy efficient homes and environmentally friendly landscapes. He has created landscapes and hardscapes that focus on controlling runoff and recharging the water cycle. Mr. Fortuna was also a certified post-tension concrete designer/installer building PT concrete tennis courts. Shifting focus after the 2007 housing fiasco he spent several years as a regional sales manager for a large pre-cast concrete stormwater manufacturer managing the culverts and underground retention/detention vaults division in the heavy civil construction sector. Most recently working as New York area sales manager for ACO, Inc., he demonstrates his passion of delivering a top-notch consultative sales approach offering the most innovative stormwater systems on the market and is also known for providing industry-leading support to designers, suppliers, and contractors alike.

Project Manager with The Gateway Engineers, Inc., in PittsburghMr. Messmer has over 40 years of engineering experience in analysis, design, plan/specification development, and project management/personnel supervision for geotechnical, foundation and structural engineering projects in the transportation, industrial, municipal and commercial fields of civil engineering. Throughout his career he has placed an emphasis on quality control and staff training. Mr. Messmer is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Concrete Institute, the American Society of Highway Engineers and the Society of American Military Engineers. He earned his B.S. degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Messmer was accepted into the Academy of Geo-Professionals in 2013.

Course Description: This 6.5-hour course provides design professionals with various erosion prevention and sediment control techniques and strategies that minimize site disturbance, restore disturbed areas, stabilize the ground surface, control stormwater and sedimentation, and protect streams.
Learning Objectives:
Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to explain the erosion/sedimentation processes and the impact of construction and development, as well as reference and comply with EPA regulations.
Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to identify construction practices that minimize site disturbance, preserve native vegetation, and restore previously disturbed areas on construction sites.
Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to preserve undisturbed areas, control traffic and material storage, and consider the impact of the construction schedule.
Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to adopt techniques for surface stabilization such as seeding, sodding, vegetation, mulching, and use of riprap and erosion control products.
Learning Objective 5: Learners will be able to control stormwater and sedimentation through the use of silt fences, drainage swales, subsurface drains, berms, and check dams.
