Course Title: Energy Retrofits for Residential and Small Commercial Buildings

Delivery Method: Live Online

Course Description: This 7-hour course provides a detailed analysis of retrofitting practices and equipment for residential and small commercial buildings. The course begins by instructing learners on how to identify and quantify the financial and environmental benefits of retrofitting to make the case for a retrofit, and then discusses the timing and planning of retrofits. The course then focuses closely on the retrofitting of lighting systems, building envelopes, HVAC and ventilation systems, renewable energy systems, service water heating and building electrification.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to quantify the financial and environmental benefits of energy retrofits and engage in the timing and planning of retrofits by modeling lifecycle costs and operational costs.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to retrofit building envelopes by reducing heating/cooling loads, insulating the envelope, and retrofitting doors and windows.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to upgrade HVAC and ventilation systems by reducing heating/cooling loads, identifying system and equipment options, using air-source heat pumps, improving air distribution, recovery, reuse and efficient controls.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to add renewable energy systems, discuss building electrification, and upgrade service water heating by identifying needs and options and reducing loads.

Learning Objective 5:
Learners will be able to retrofit lighting systems by reducing lighting loads and utilizing efficient interior and exterior lighting and controls.
