This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 6.0 PDHs for professional engineers and 6.0 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects in all states that allow this learning method. Please refer to specific state rules to determine eligibility.

6.0 HSW LUs (AIA)
Mr. Westbrook designed his own solar home in north Texas in 1996, which won the Energy Value Housing Award for Innovative Design. It still ranks as one of the most efficient homes in Texas. While serving as sustainable development manager at Texas Instruments International Facilities, Mr. Westbrook was the LEED AP for the 1.1 million square foot Texas Instruments factory, which was the first LEED Gold semiconductor factory in the world. He led the effort to improve the energy and water efficiency of TI’s 20 million square feet of existing global facilities. They were able to double the company energy and water efficiency in less than 10 years. In 2012, Mr. Westbrook was named a Senior Fellow for the US State Department’s Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas program. He visited Honduras, Bolivia, Columbia, and Peru where he worked with governments, universities, and industry on efficiency and renewable energy. Mr. Westbrook received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1982.

Course Title: Designing and Constructing Net-Zero Energy Homes

Course Description: This six-hour course begins with an analysis of the applicable residential energy efficiency requirements and certifications before focusing on the planning, design, and construction of a net-zero energy home. The course will explain solar orientation and how to design energy efficiency envelopes, mechanical systems, and electrical, lighting, and renewable energy systems.
Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to utilize thermal and vapor barriers, roofs, walls, and the placement of windows and doors to design an energy-efficient envelope.
Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to analyze the types and sizing of HVAC systems typically used in net-zero homes and utilize thermal storage where possible.
Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to reference and comply with the energy conservation standards and the residential provisions of the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC).
Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to explore the lighting design, controls, batteries and solar photovoltaic systems commonly used in net-zero designs.
