Certificates of completion can be downloaded in PDF form upon passing a short quiz. A link to the quiz will be sent to each qualifying attendee immediately after the webinar. The certificate can be downloaded from the Results page of the quiz upon scoring 80% or higher.

Continuing Education Credit Information

This webinar is open to the public and is designed to qualify for 6.5 PDHs for professional engineers, 6.5 HSW continuing education hours for licensed architects, and 6.5 HSW continuing education hours for landscape architects in all states that allow this learning method. Please refer to specific state rules to determine eligibility.

Alejandra “Alex” Warner

Citywide Access Specialist, City of San Diego/Sustainability and Mobility Department

Ms. Warner has dedicated over 30 years to planning, designing, and constructing public facilities, with a strong focus on accessible design for the past 25 years. Her goal is to ensure that individuals of all abilities can enjoy the City of San Diego facilities. Ms. Warner has held positions in various departments, including Engineering, Parks, and Public Works, and is currently with the Sustainability and Mobility Department, specifically in the ADA Compliance and Accessibility Section. Her influence extends beyond her current role. Ms. Warner actively collaborates on developing Street Design Guidelines, curb ramp design guidelines and standards, municipal codes, and Public Rights of Way policies. Her oversight of the City’s accessibility compliance program and implementation of improvements outlined in the Facilities and the Right-of-Way (ROW) Transition Plan demonstrate her comprehensive approach to accessibility. Ms. Warner holds a Master of Science degree in Architectural Engineering and is a Certified Access Specialist. She also reviews design and construction documents, provides training, and develops new standards and guidelines to ensure compliance with accessibility regulations. Ms. Warner is a board member of California’s Certified Access Specialists Institute.

Course Title: Designing Accessible Pedestrian Facilities under ADA, IBC and PROWAG

Delivery Method: Live Online

Course Description: This 6.5-hour course will assist design professionals in designing more accessible pedestrian facilities by utilizing the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the International Building Code (IBC), and the Public Right-of-Way Accessibility Guidelines (PROWAG) as both references and as a framework. The course defines public rights-of-way, discusses accessible pedestrian access routes, street crossings, parking and transits stops, and explores the shared use path guidelines.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to define what a public right-of-way is, and discuss the standards and guidelines prescribed by the 2010 ADA Accessibility Standards, the 2021 International Building Code, and PROWAG.

Learning Objective 2:
Learners will be able to design accessible pedestrian access routes with appropriate route widths, slopes, cross slopes, surfaces, changes in level, curb ramps, blended transitions, landings, detectable warnings, ramps and handrails.

Learning Objective 3:
Learners will be able to provide accessible pedestrian street crossings, parking and transit spots with appropriate crossing times, accessible pedestrian signals, buttons, roundabouts, and more.

Learning Objective 4:
Learners will be able to discuss shared use path guidelines, resolve conflicts between users, separate pathways for pedestrians and bicyclists, and design shared use path intersections.
