Landscape Architecture Team Leader at SeamonWhiteside

Mary Martinich, PLA, is a Landscape Architecture Team Leader with SeamonWhiteside, a full-service landscape architecture and civil engineering firm. She is passionate about promoting urban environments that are environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable. Mary has designed a variety of private and public projects including parks, streetscapes, plazas, mixed-use, multi-family, hospitality and commercial projects. With a passion for low-impact design, she is a guest lecturer for the Clemson Extension Master Rain Gardener program in the Lowcountry and teaches Sustainable Landscaping for the Native Plant Society.

Kim Morganello

Water Resources Associate at Clemson Extension

Kim Morganello is a Water Resources Associate for Clemson Extension, based in Charleston, South Carolina. Kim focuses her work on community resiliency and adaptation as it relates to water quantity and quality concerns. Kim has developed tools, resources and programming to broaden the application of landscape-level best management practices, in particular rain gardens, wetland restoration, vegetative buffers, rainwater harvesting, stormwater pond retrofits, and native plant landscaping.

Amy E. Scaroni, PhD

Assistant Professor at Clemson University

Amy E. Scaroni, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in Clemson’s Department of Forestry and Environmental Conservation, and holds a dual appointment as an Extension Specialist with Clemson Extension. She specializes in watershed management, working closely with coastal communities to identify and address water quality challenges to restore healthy watersheds. Her work mainly focuses on the use of nature-based solutions to reduce flooding and prevent pollution, and the development of outreach strategies to ensure success.

Course Title: Deep Dive into Rain Garden Design and Construction

Course Description: This 2.5-hour course explains the functions, benefits, design, construction and maintenance of rain gardens. The course provides a discussion on rain garden site assessment, design options, plant selection, amenities and case studies.

Learning Objectives:

Learning Objective 1: Learners will be able to assess potential sites for rain gardens by considering topography, soil, proximity to structures, vegetation and traffic, and calculating the amount of water to be drained.

Learning Objective 2: Learners will be able to determine the size of the rain garden based on catchment area and existing soil, and explore various designs (shapes, orientations, berms) and plants based on function.

Learning Objective 3: Learners will be able to identify opportunities to add amenities such as paths, walkways, benches and fences and integrate the garden with other landscape features.

Learning Objective 4: Learners will be able to define Low Impact Development, explain hydrology and water issues in urban settings, adopt maintenance practices for rain gardens.
