John Barentine, Ph.D

Principal Consultant, Dark Sky Consulting, LLC

John Barentine is the Principal Consultant at Dark Sky Consulting, LLC, and was formerly the Director of Public Policy for the International Dark-Sky Association. He earned a Ph.D. in astronomy from the University of Texas at Austin, and previously held staff positions at the National Solar Observatory, Apache Point Observatory, and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Throughout his career, he has been involved in education and outreach efforts to help increase the public understanding of science. He is a member of the American Astronomical Society and the International Astronomical Union, and is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. The asteroid (14505) Barentine is named in his honor. His interests outside of astronomy and light pollution research include history, art and architecture, politics, law and current events.

Nancy Clanton, PE, FIES, FIALD, LC, LEED Fellow

CEO, Visibility Innovations, LLC

Nancy Clanton is CEO of Visibility Innovations, LLC a consulting firm specializing in sustainable and regenerative design. Nancy is a registered Professional Engineer. Nancy is a member of the National Academy of Science committee on the assessment of solid state lighting. Nancy is International Standards Organization (ISO) 205 WG 7,USA delegate. Nancy received the 2018 Edison Report Lifetime Achievement Award, 2014 ACEC Colorado Outstanding Woman Engineer Award, the International Clean Design Award, and the 2021 CU Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award.

Course Title: Dark-Sky Lighting and Ordinances

Course Description: This two-hour course explains the consequences of light pollution, identifies the design issues with typical existing outdoor lighting, and provides design strategies and case study analyses of responsible outdoor lighting and community ordinances.

Learning Objective 1:
Learners will be able to identify the sources and causes of light pollution and explain the negative effects of artificial light at night.

Learners will be able to examine typical existing outdoor lighting and identify common issues such as overlighting, light trespass, wasted energy, and the negative effects on the environment (plants, animals, birds, pollinators).

Learners will be able to utilize responsible outdoor lighting that is useful, targeted, controlled, and limited with the purpose of providing adequate visibility to users.
